Madoff likely assaulted in prison
Madoff likely assaulted in prison

DURHAM RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 24 (UPI) -- Ponzi scheme fraudster Bernard Madoff has been treated and released from a North Carolina hospital for injuries likely the result of an assault, sources said.

ABC News reported Thursday that Madoff, convicted of 11 counts of fraud and serving a 150-year sentence for operating a multi-billion Ponzi scheme, was released from the Duke University Hospital Tuesday after being admitted the Friday before with facial fractures, broken ribs and a collapsed lung.

ABC News did not divulge the sources' credentials, but said WTVD, Raleigh Durham, N.C., was the first news outlet informed of Madoff's hospitalization.

Prison officials said only that Madoff was moved to the medical unit in the Butner Federal Correction Complex. A prison spokeswoman, Cathy Elsea, said "we do not release … specific reasons," as to why an inmate is moved to the medical unit.

His attorney, Ira Sorkin, also would not say why Madoff was in the hospital.

3. American prisons are despicable
I don't care what anyone thinks about particular inmates. The prison system in this country is shameful.

7. Wait about 30 minutes
There should be at least three prison-rape "jokes" by then.

15. Yep. And Americans are a vicious, vindictive lot.
I live in Maricopa County AZ, home of fascist thug Joe Arpaio and the tent city jails. People here think he's a hero because inmates are mistreated, humiliated, and sometimes killed in his jails. :puke:

19. I think Americans are just misunderstood
They are constantly on the rebound from having their savings stolen by the bipolar economy. Its makes you a little testy from time to time. Americans are really like a giant cute polar bear...that just shouldn't be hugged unless sedated

28. What do you mean "and sometimes killed in his jails."
Far more prisoners die from inmate violence then the state will ever execute

Beaten by guards, denied medical care, things like that. I'm serious.

9. I seriously doubt that it was someone who lost their life savings who beat him
Edited on Thu Dec-24-09 07:47 PM by Matariki
on the other hand, i've heard a first hand account of the police offering a crime victim's family the opportunity to 'buy' prison punishment. Actually the offer was to have the perpetrators killed in prison. Fortunately, as upset as they were they had the humanity to decline.

(edited because i'm apparently incapable of typing more than one sentence without missing words and typos)

13. Prison life is dangerous, but this shows they did not
protect him well, and yes, they are responsible for the safety of EVERY INMATE, no matter what they've done.

And nobody deserves to be assaulted... no matter what they've done

Hire 8 blackwater contractors to follow him around? The dude could of got hit going to the John. The only way he is going to get ensured protection is by sending him to the SuperMax

20. How about reform prisons so shit like this isn't the norm?
How about work toward changing the general attitude in this country that beatings and rape are an acceptable part of a person's punishment?

22. Seriously, thats kinda dumb
Why would a private prison reform prisoners if it ensured less prisoners (and thereby, less profits)?

Its a pretty decent question, ya know. Same sorta deal about reforming medical care/philosophy to actually cure people, rather than treat em.

27. You know you make a noble effort to change the attitudes
but unfortunately I have learned that it does not change for many until they spend a little time in prison. There is a lot of cruelty in them, and people accept it, because of that eye for an eye that is part of the culture.

I have no idea how to change this cultural imperative...

By the way Merry Christmas to you and yours.
