Fresno police arrested a 14-year Fresno County sheriff's deputy after he drove his patrol car erratically for miles Wednesday through Fresno rush-hour traffic.

Brian Hillis, 39, was booked on a misdemeanor charge of driving under the influence, though authorities said they will not know results of blood testing until next week. Authorities routinely book motorists on DUI charges if they suspect a controlled substance led to the erratic driving behavior.

The Fresno County sheriff's deputy arrested Wednesday after driving erratically in rush-hour highway traffic had a suspended driver's license and had taken allergy medicine, according to a Fresno police report. "Hillis was unable to recall some of his driving and he thought maybe he had a medical condition," a police officer wrote in the report, written after Hillis was arrested.

"Hillis stated he was falling asleep while driving home and had the windows down and the stereo turned up. Hillis also stated he was slapping himself in the face, all to keep him awake for the drive home."
