Taliban orders its own Afghan surge


PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Dec. 24 (UPI) -- The Afghan Taliban need assistance to tackle the increasing number of international troops headed to Afghanistan, a top Pakistani Taliban chief said.

Waliur Rehman, deputy to Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud, said the Afghan Taliban needs support to counter the 30,000 U.S. soldiers ordered to the country by U.S. President Barack Obama, London's Telegraph newspaper reports.

"Since Obama is also sending additional forces to Afghanistan, we sent thousands of our men there to fight NATO and American forces," he said.

Obama in an address to the nation Dec. 1 ordered additional troops to deploy to Afghanistan as part of a revised war strategy. NATO ministers committed 7,000 troops to take part in the effort.

Rehman called on Obama instead to focus on domestic issues like the economy, noting, "Americans don't want war."
