I am an Obama supporter and was there from the get go in Iowa..
Obama did NOT campaign on the public option.. He campaigned on having everyone having the same access to insurance that the congress had.

He would love a public option, we would all love a public option..He wanted to sign a public option

BUT HE DID NOT CAMPAIGN ON IT.. at every stop when he talked about access to health care it was that all Americans should be able to access insurance the way the congress does..

72. There's no doubt Howard Dean campaigned on subsidized insurance
It was the foundation of his proposal and he campaigned on it every day, at every campaign stop. But now you would swear he never said a word about private insurance and was the pied piper of single payer.

Campaigning on a particular platform has a meaning. Mentioning that you'd like everyone to have a college education doesn't mean that you're promising to pay for everyone to go for as long as they'd like, success or failure. Obama campaigned on a set of health care principles, but he did not promise a public option.

payer! It was at some union rally. I saw the clip on tv at the time of the speech. So I can only guess you are going to say "well that's not the same as "campaigning" for it". If so, it just means you spin as much as obama lies.

He just knows it can't be passed, so NO, he definitely did not campaign on it. That has been the single stupidest argument against him the left has made and that kind of bullshit is exactly why I can't align myself with the left.

74. That was when he was a lowly state senator
By the time he was a presidential candidate he had dropped any talk of single payer, but still opposed mandates. Once he was president he'd barely even listen to single payer advocates and had changed his mind about mandates.

The further up the ladder he goes, the more corporate friendly he becomes.

I'm sure he'll do very well after he leaves "public" service.

Its funny how 'reality' hits the new Presidents at our expense after they're elected. I've never known a Presidential candidate to fulfill their campaign promises. Everything always changes after the elections and not because the American people want something. The status quo and those who make sure it stays that way always get their way.

Not one of can read his mind, far as I know. What someone says and what's deep in their heart are often two different things. Why does it matter anyway? Do you get extra credit for "wanting" or "loving to have" even if you're not "accomplishing" or "fighting like hell for" it?

43. I am a Senior and I've heard so many Presidents campaign
in my life time.

What they say and what they are able to do are two different things ~
It fascinates me that so many people think that every word that comes out of the mouth of a politician during the heat of a campaign should be signed, sealed and delivered to everyone within the sound of his/her voice.

It is campaign talk and unless WE.CAN. push the Congress to make it happen, HE can't make it happen by himself.

His name is Obama not Superman!

Now Bush was different because HE was not the President, he was truly Howdy Dowdy and he did what his Daddy, Cheney and Rove told him to do -- their buddies in the M$M went right along with their ownership of our country and Democrats sat and complained and all we did was TALK and COMPLAINING ~ we had no power to do anything else and frankly we still don't have the power - BUSH still does. The sooner we wake up and realize that little fact, the sooner we can try to work together as Democrats to stick together ~ stop being craps in a barrel, they never get out.

BUSHCO owned America and they still DO!

71. The difference
There's a marked difference in how hard Obama tried to win the presidency, he beat the Clintons, an amazing feat, and how hard he's campaigned for health care. He's laid down.

After he's in office virtually NONE of his promises have been kept. In fact he's gone in the direct opposite direction on many of them.

This isn't about being incapable. This is about being complicit with the corporations.

perhaps for the very first time. It's uncomfortable parting with strong illusions.

He had also said a mandate wasn't the answer. Obama is a human, mortal politician who has his hands very full of bad shit stacked up against this that he walked into, his leadership has been less agressive than many hoped to see on this, but whether you agree about that or not -- he has just plain been (foolishly) less than politically honest in this HCR aftermath. He dissembled. The records of it first-hand are there. He's not the first President to do it, and he won't be the last.

64. That's kind of silly. He fucked up the quote to the Washington Post. Big deal.
He should have said what he said in the subsequent PBS interview -- that he supported the public option but compromises had to made and it's still a good bill.

IMO, it's silly to try to justify the statement as accurate and it's silly to make a big deal of it. I doubt seriously that he went into the interview intending to rewrite history. It was just a fucked up quote.

67. Some days it's like the Twilight Zone around here.
Lately it's every day.

And the divide around here gets wider and wider every day.

68. Feel free to elaborate on those sentiments with your 18th post
... not that I'm implying you're somebody's sock puppet, as that'd be against the rules...

75. Obama must have a policy talent for "speaking in tongues"
Whatever he says, anyone listening hears what they want to hear and only what they want to hear.

Kinda sucks for him when all those people expect him to follow through on it.

76. Oh, good. Cuz I was hoping we'd elected another slick, "meaning of IS" con artist.
I feel better already.

78. Agreed - The Nontroversy Folks Are Pulling Single References To A Public Plan In Long Speeches
To argue Aha! he campaigned on it. Yet, when you read the entire speech, interview of booklet, it is clear that the public plan is NOT the focus of President Obama's campaign. Oddly, when I have listed speeches and interviews in their entirety without comment, these posts have been un-recc'd.

It is as though folks are not interested in the truth. Rather, they want to push the talking point that President lied, which he did not.

79. At this point, it really doesn't matter
It was part of a platform and was barely mentioned during the campaign, but it's all moot now as the 58 + 1 was not enough to get the public option in the senate. If Lieberman wasn't actually a Republican or the Senate rules weren't so effed up, I'd be more pissed. Trying to squeeze blood from a rock is never satisfying and requires a lot of effort.
