Is is worse when Republicans pass bad bills, or when Democrats pass bad bills?
Edited on Fri Dec-25-09 01:50 PM by Faryn Balyncd

Seems to me it's a mixed bag.

When Bush/Cheney were power, much of the evil that was done (much of which was not impeded by the niceties of law) seem a much greater immediate threat. But there was hope at the end of the tunnel, provided by an articulate opposition.

Bad bills passed by Democrats, however, are a horse of a different color: While the immediate threat seems perhaps less pernicious, the fact that the side of reform has been co-opted by dark forces, that the voting public has no clear option for democratic reform, and that the old Bush/Cheney allies will be the political beneficiaries of this squandered opportunity - - - - all these seem to provide significant danger.

1. A bad bill is a bad bill.
The effect is the same.

2. What Bad Democratic bill passed?
and what is bad about it?
And is there any good in it?

Or is "bad" the new description of a bill one hasn't actually read,
and the description is based on what other people who also haven't read the bill
have said?

5. I wish I had listened to Don.
A friend of mine, named Don, once told me the difference between the Democrats and the Republicans is:

When a Republican is going to screw you, they dress it up and swear up and down they are not going to screw you.

When a Democrat is going to screw you, they pretty much let you know they are getting ready to screw you.

I'm beginning to understand that philosophy now, except I think the roles seem to be reversing.

7. worse if the party betrays their principles to pass the bad bill
We expect Repubs to want to pass bills that are bad for the people but good for the wealthy because that is a principle of the party. If Dems pass the same bills it's worse because not only are they bad bills it betrays the principles of the Dem party.

12. +1

Kill the bill.

Forcing people to buy insurance is no more the answer to a failed health care system than forcing people to buy houses is the solution to homelessness.

9. When republicans pass bad bills poor and middle class people suffer
When Democrats pass bad bills, everybody suffers, but the wealthy suffer relatively more.

11. If the bill results in some folks getting some way past due medical attention
and saving a few lives it is not a "bad bill". This bill is far from what progressives wanted but to paraphrase what Bernie Sanders has said "it is an important first step".

13. Usually bad bills are bipartisan ones -- i.e. NAFTA, Patriot Act, FISA, etc.
