Paul Krugman says this bill is a victory for Liberals. Dick Morris says it's a disaster.
So naturally, DU is siding with Dick Morris.

Paul

Dick

This place has finally gone down the rabbit hole.

1. True. Some people seem intent on turning a huge victory into a defeat.
They would have despised Social Security and Franklin Roosevelt.

No self-respecting liberal today would support Franklin Roosevelt's original Social Security Act. It excluded agricultural workers -- a huge part of the economy in 1935, and one in which Latinos have traditionally worked. It excluded domestic workers, which included countless African Americans and immigrants. It did not cover the self-employed, or state and local government employees, or railroad employees, or federal employees or employees of nonprofits. It didn't even cover the clergy. FDR's Social Security Act did not have benefits for dependents or survivors. It did not have a cost-of-living increase. If you became disabled and couldn't work, you got nothing from Social Security.

If that version of Social Security were introduced today, progressives like me would call it cramped, parsimonious, mean-spirited and even racist. Perhaps it was all those things. But it was also a start. And for 74 years we have built on that start. We added more people to the winner's circle: farm workers and domestic workers and government workers. We extended benefits to the children of working men and women who died. We granted benefits to the disabled. We mandated annual cost-of-living adjustments. And today Social Security is the bedrock of our progressive vision of the common good.

Health care may follow that same trajectory.

15. And if FDR had turned over SS to a cartel, you might have an apt
comparison. BTW, how are the 401K's doing?

A public option, even as limited as Erza Klein's version of social security is, would have been acceptable.

2. Its like being forced to lose weight. Its good for you, but everyone hates it.
And if they get to vote, you are probably OUT.

So I guess is a triumph for policy wonks, and a disaster for future electoral victory.

This past week has not been one of DU's finer moments.

Morris is a fucking asshole who hates this bill because it does too much. The people here hate it because it doesn't do enough. And you make a false comparison of the two then use it to berate people who disagree with you.

Fucking Pathetic.

I'll side with me and my family and the rest of the working families who need a real bill. Both Krugman and Morris are fucking wrong.

7. Seems like I gave fairly concrete examples of people disagreeing with Krug and agreeing with Dick.
I don't think it's a false comparison at all--and I didn't notice any berating going on, although the phrase "fucking pathetic," in the right context, might be perceived as "fightin' words."

Calm down, 'k?

8. Bottom line: You are standing with the people who hate this bill because it doesn't do enough
If you oppose it. Its like somebody asks for a raise of $1. You wanted a raise of $2. So instead of standing with the person who wants the $1 raise and fighting for the $2 raise later, you stand with the people who say you should get NOTHING and oppose the $1 raise.

9. It's too early to tell (or too late as the case may be)...
as usual.. our media tells us nothing.. so we have no way of knowing what REALLY is in the bill..

But if I had to go on past performance and status quo...

13. Waitwaitwaitwait. Dick Morris is a Democrat all of a sudden?!
After YEARS of bashing the Clintons and sucking up to Bush Republicans in general and Sean Hannity in particular, of calling Obama a radical on Newsmax and currently being a strategist to a Republican candidate for MA Governor...now he's in our party?

This is the guy who said that Katrina would be a huge polling victory for Bush, who said that Sarah Palin would cause John McCain to win in a landslide. Don't you get it?! This guy doesn't CARE about facts--he'll say whatever he thinks it takes to make the GOP more popular! ONLY ON FOX NEWS COULD THIS GUY BE CONSIDERED IN THE SAME PARTY AS PAUL KRUGMAN!!

AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

like Ben Nelson, Blanche Lincoln, etc. Remember, we're the "big tent" party.

18. He is not a Democrat. He hasn't been a Democrat for years. That is a FACT.
He is an independent conservative who wants Obama, Democrats, liberals, progressives, etc. to fail at all cost and the Republicans to get back in charge. This is another FACT.

We don't seem to agree on opinions, but can we at least agree on facts? Enough of this "enemy of my enemy" bullshit.

I will now have to put you on ignore, because the temptation to insult you is too great.

I will now also have to take a break from DU, for roughly the same reason.

Sorry.

14. So true... lol... But if I had time to read all 3000 pages of this bill...
I would be glad to tell you (honestly) what it contains.

What's that wording they always put in Mutual Funds Prospectus.. "past performance is no guarantee of future success" ,.... or something to that effect.

What I am saying.. is that I don't have the fortitude to read through 3000 pages of corporate weasel wording and fine print escape clauses...

But if I had to go purely on historical events and past performance.. I would say.. basically.. we are screwed... :-)

17. I get that alot...."read the bill"...yeah right. Like that's my job. I elected
people to write and read bills, but unfortunately they let the lobbyists write the bills and then they don't read them.

Fortunately I think we get enough information just listening to people who have read it arguing about it.

You're right though, from what I know, we are totally screwed. :(

22. A victory for liberals? It is to laugh.
A victory for Obama, yes, but not for liberals.

Kill the bill.

Forcing people to buy insurance is no more the answer to a failed health care system than forcing people to buy houses is the solution to homelessness.
