Responding to two recent national polls, local Tea Party activists are expressing skepticism over the results of these polls, viewing them as an attempt by the Democrats to split the conservative vote. On Wednesday, a joint NBC/Wall Street Journal poll showed the Tea Party receiving more favorable votes than the two main parties when comparing them with the grassroots movement. The Tea Party led this poll with a 41% favorability rating, followed by the Democratic Party with 35%, and the GOP coming in last with a 28% favorability rating. This poll follows a December 7, 2009, generic candidate poll conducted by Rasmussen Reports which found the Democrat candidate receiving 36% of the vote, followed by the Tea Party candidate with 23%, while the generic GOP candidate finished third with 18%. The remaining voters were undecided.
Many in the 912 and Tea Party movement in the state see this as a political effort by the Democratic Party to encourage Tea Party activists to tear apart the conservative movement and its voting base. Eric Evans, a local 912 activist, stated, “The Democrats really want a third party, as long as it is a conservative party to split the conservative vote and let the Democrats win.” Another local 912er agrees. “Pollsters have an agenda. A quick shift in how they are showing the movement may well be an attempt to split conservatives,” is how Don Rodgers of the Pikes Peak Patriots views the polls.
