He got off alot luckier than he would have if he pulled that stunt on a plane I am on. I carry a carbon fiber dagger with me on every flight. I have had no problems getting it through security. If I ever had to use it onboard a plane I would just say I disarmed whoever I was struggling with.

I seriously doubt that he is Al Qaeda. If he is, they are really scraping the bottom of the barrel. Their intelligence is good enough that they know passengers will not put up with crap. I am all for anyone who tries this stupidity being carted off the plane in a bodybag. I would ask the flight attendents to toss a couple of ham sandwiches in the body bag for good measure.

I can only imagine how disapointed our President must be at the impotence of a fellow Muslim.

1. Meh. Carrying a weapon is an entirely different thing from knowing how to use it.

And even if specifically trained in hand-to-hand combat with an edged weapon, it is folly to assume a potential adversary hasn't been, and would be easily intimidated by a bald, fat guy holding a knife.

I was an ambulance driver for a short time in the military. Most of my runs were to collect passed out drunk NCO's. To make it worse, the alcohol heats them up and they disrobe before they pass out on the lawn.

this was a drunk, who wanted to help his buddy, who had an OD of heroin. So bright boy breaks bottle and starts charging us holding half bottle broken off to a nice cutting edge. Cops were clear on the other side of this low life bar. As I said, I got lucky.

At least in Mexico assault on an EMS worker is treated by the law the same way as assault on a police officer. And nobody blinked when I did use my knowledge of self defense.
