Bomb material were sewn into the suspect's underwear!
The plot to blow up an American passenger jet over Detroit was organized and launched by al-Qaeda leaders in Yemen who apparently sewed bomb materials into the suspect's underwear before sending him on his mission, federal authorities tell ABC News.

Investigators say the suspect had more than 80 grams of PETN, a compound related to nitro-glycerin used by the military. The so-called shoe bomber, Richard Reid, had only about 50 grams kin his failed attempt in 2001 to blow up a U.S.-bound jet. Yesterday's bomb failed because the detonator may have been too small or was not in "proper contact" with the explosive material, investigators told ABC News.

What will be the new security protocol? You can not wear an underwear if you want to get on a plane?

It's one thing to blow yourself up, which presumably happens instantaneously, but setting your genitals on fire?

So it says his father warned security about him some time ago. NTSA doing its fine work again. I'm sure they'll be careful not to let any 90 year old ladies on planes without frisking them first, though.

And I hear now no going to the lav or touching your pocketbook during the last hour of the flight. That should make the lines for the lav even more interesting, esp. when they go into a holding pattern for hours.

Say, what happened to those bomb sniffing dogs?

23. Not every passenger is put through the scan.
From my experience they seem to use them rarely on domestic flights. Don't know about international flights.

The other thing I have noticed is that they mostly use them for large people - I guess they assume they can hide bombs in fat rolls.

7. I think the protocol should be not to kill innocent civilians
in countries across the globe. It doesn't make for warm fuzzy relations and endangers everyone on the planet.
All this shit is driven by US foreign policy. You cannot treat human beings like collateral damage and walk away as if nothing happened.

I'm so fucking sick of all this shit.

was to defend Bosnian muslims against Serbian genocide. We should not pursue and aggressive foreign policy, but it is also true that some people carry out violence for irrational reasons.

43. I'm with you. We are murdering too many innocent people and saying they are terrorist.
Why is so hard to see the obvious? Someone needs to be the first to stop the killing. The most obvious candidate here would be the United States because we are the ones who perpetuate most of the violence in the first place. How many #2's are we going to kill? How many groups of 30 are we going to blow up before enough people figure out we are being lied to to keep the wars going?

42. In some ways, this was actually pretty clever
For most people, the prospect of a crotch pat-down is likely to discourage airline travel. But the prospect of bombers using this method to secret explosives onto planes has to be taken seriously, lest travelers be scared off by that possibility.

So it puts the airlines and authorities in a difficult position. No matter what they do, airline travel suddenly becomes even more unpalatable than it was a few days ago, which is saying quite a bit.

50. All passengers will be required to strip before boarding the plane
and will pass through a whole-body X-ray machine after donning the appropriate travel attire (an airline-issue hospital gown with no strings attached). "Carry-on" luggage will be searched and placed on board by carefully trained and licensed airline personnel. Passengers wishing to use the on-board restroom facilities will be searched on entry and exit of said facilities.

And someone will still figure out how to insert bomb ingredients and hardware into the plane and assemble said components without being detected.

Fly the friendly skies :)
