We needed a new corkscrew, and didn't want one made in China

We broke a corkscrew the other day. Made in China is something this house avoids. We looked several places. No luck. Then while shopping at the grocery, I saw several for sale. The one we bought wasn't made in China. Mexico, etc.

Made in Italy. I was shocked but happy. It looks like most of their items are made in the USA.

4. Check out your local thrift shops
Lots of older American made items are available. You just need to check out the bins with the gadgets. They clean up well in hot water, some suds and laundry bleach.

Give it some time, you'll find them. :hi:

10. expand your search to 'wine openers', not just corkscrews...
and you'll probably have a better shot at finding an american-made(or at least not chinese-made) product.

11. The Campagnolo Corkscrew is a work of art.
This one is gold, but they also have them in Silver and Bronze. The Derailleur is also Campagnolo, and should give you an idea how big the corkscrew is.

12. All you need is a large screw eye and a screwdriver.
Screw the screw eye into the cork, insert the shaft of the screwdriver thru the ring, and twist. Of course metal hardware and tools likely originate in China these days, so this tip might not help. It is the cheapest solution though. I guess the only real solution would be a home forge.

15. Corkscrews will be the same sort of vanishing breed that...
churchkeys became. One reason is a shortage of cork.

More and more wines will be offered with various kinds of screw-on type caps...even the high-quality wines.

17. My wine comes in a box. All it takes is a flip of the little handle....
Don't even need a glass, really. Just bend over backward beneath the spout.

20. Frequent thrift shops and yard sales - you can still find US made small
items from time to time, but they are drying up - I have several kitchen utensils from the 1920's and several chef's knives from the 19th century. Even found a few old US made iron pans, but they are becoming pretty rare.

Good luck.

21. The moral dilemma with "buy American" is that...
the product might be made in a sweatshop in one of those "right-to-work" states down south that had been stealing jobs from the Northeast and Rust Belt while Mao was too busy with the Cultural Revolution to bother making cheap gadgets.
