Orangeburg Massacre to be re-enacted

The events of the Orangeburg Massacre will be re-enacted during at play at S.C. State University's MLK Auditorium Feb. 4-6.

Three black students were killed during the 1968 incident as students gathered to protest segregation at a local bowling alley.

The play, called "Taking A Stand," will be offered by the S.C. State Student Government Association and the S.C. State Henderson Davis Players.

S.C. State's Student Government Association is led by Zachary Middleton, the great nephew of Delano Middleton, one of the students killed.

In an e-mail discussing the play, Zachary Middleton said its purpose is to give young people and others in the Orangeburg community an understanding of the sacrifices that were made to make life easier today.

"I feel that I have an obligation to uphold the legacy that was never fully realized," Zachary Middleton wrote.

Tickets to the play cost $10 in advance and $12 at the door. Student tickets cost $5 in advance and $7 at the door.

1. This is the best way to teach such things. Maybe the only way.
And apparently we have some George Wallace types on here, because those are the only sorts who would possibly "unrec" this thread. Shame on them.

Thanks for posting this.

3. That's right. Looks as if the material must be brought to them.
This is a very decent, painless way of bringing people nose to nose with the truth.

2. Like Jackson State, this incident is usually forgotten or
ignored. Kent State is remembered.

4. That's another event that should be re-enacted
Others I'd suggest would be

1)The Stonewall Uprising of 1969.

2)The police riots in Chicago from 1968.

3)The Freedom Rides.

4)The Seattle General Strike of 1919.

5. Kent State is remembered
because the students who died were white and white people matter. :sarcasm:

8. Just as the murders of the black antiwar students at Jackson State at the same time as Kent State

are ALSO usually forgotten.

All those who died for a better world should be remembered, and their stories passed from generation to generation, because each generation will likely face similar struggles and similar need for sacrifice, until we finally build the humane, democratic, and life-affirming social order we deserve and have a RIGHT to create.
