Schuringa’s business partner suprised what he did -Jasper's not an action man.
This from a terrific article in The London Times about the foiled airplane bombing.

His business partner, Lydia Faber, said: “He’s a wonderful guy but I have to admit I was surprised by what he managed to do — Jasper’s not what you’d call an action man. He’s an extremely nice man who makes films and loves surfing.”

(I say three cheers for extremely nice men!)

Schuringa reached through the flames and ripped off what looked like a small plastic shampoo bottle. He yelled for water and a flight attendant arrived with a fire extinguisher. Others brought water in jugs.

“We saw the fear in the flight attendants’ eyes,” said Richelle Keepman, who watched them race up the aisle. By then smoke was drifting through the cabin.

Abdulmutallab struggled and was belligerent: “He was stood up, he was yelling, swearing. He was screaming about Afghanistan. He was fighting with the wonderful stewards we had. There were five men, big men and three women.”

1. If this is going to keep happening, we all must realize that we might have to do something like this
to save ourselves. Good for him.

3. Its interesting that people closer to the bomber didn't respond the way he did.
I'd like to know the pyshcology between the two types of people. How is it that he wasn't affected by other people's inaction?

5. And we need to be aware of how we are taught to refrain from doing so since it might get us killed.
Becoming pro-active might be the way to stay alive.

6. Does growing up in a society without guns make one braver?
Is there a cultural difference? Given that he wasn't a so-called action type he probably grew up with the same messages. So what clicked in him?

14. Do I care? Not really
If you find it offensive to point out how hot the hero is, I don't care if you ignore me. You are probably against gay marriage as well. Your loss.

10. Perhaps but I tend to think its not growing up in a gun culture.
The Dutch don't have a constant concern that someone might pull a gun so they are probably more confident in their ability to physically overpower a threatening figure.

12. As new details emerge of Abdulmutallab,
his past and his journey, it seems clear that airline security is not tight enough to stop would-be attackers boarding planes armed with dangerous chemicals.

By some accounts Abdulmutallab was a hothead from an early age. Yesterday a friend who knew him at school, but asked not to be named, said: “He was not a party boy. He’d never go to the disco. I remember one time during Ramadan, a group of us were going to the disco to have fun. He gently but firmly told us that this would be un-Islamic.”

Abdulmutallab attended the British School in Lome, Togo. The friend added: “About three years ago we were talking about 9/11. I was saying under no circumstances could it ever be okay to kill all those innocent people. He was much more equivocal.

“He said 9/11 was an act of war — that American troops were on Saudi soil and had humiliated Muslim countries so these actions might be necessary. ”
