2. there used to be a google toolbar addon which streamed LBN. |
|
I used it for a while, unfortuantly it appears to have not been kept up to date and I have since lost it. It's still installed on my old computer, but it's no longer compatible with this one. But otherwise I sort of agree, doesn't the iphone have built in web browsing, so you always have a built in DU ap?

5. DU works quite well on Mobile Safari, but see my reply below for some areas where it could improve. |

I have that annoying "hidden threads" problem too from time to time. I'd love to see a DU with an mobile-optimized interface. Heck, I'd donate $$$ for such a site/app.

4. All the usual stuff, but without those several icons that trip-up iPhone users. |
|
DU actually works very well through the iPhone Safari app, but some of its icons are spaced too-closely to others to reliably pick the one you want. For example, when a thread has gotten enough replies to gain "View All" status, that "View All" button is very close to the teeny little "Hide Thread" box, and about one in ten or twenty times, I end up hiding a thread that I meant to read. So I end up taking a trip through the Hidden Thread Manager.
There are a few other glitches like that. A dedicated app could straighten all that stuff out.
Also, an app might re-arrange the columns in a more useful way so one could read thread titles, the thread author name, and the thread statistics without scrolling back-and-forth from left to right repeatedly.
Stuff like that -- just minor operational improvements that help the user navigate on a small touchscreen. And yeah, I'd probably pay for such an app.
Another alternative would be a dedicated mobile version of the site, probably done mostly with different CSS. That might allow other mobile phone browsers to come along for the ride, but it can't be as well-optimized as a dedicated iPhone app.

7. If you could see how tiny things are you would understand immediately! |
|
Also sometimes the width is really wide and you gave to blow it up and scroll left to right left to right etc.

3. I think it's a good idea |
|
I even asked Skinner about it too a few weeks ago and he seemed to think it was a good idea to have a mobile app or at least a mobile-optimized site but stated that some major upgrades were needed to the site before that was possible. I use my iPhone to read DU a lot myself but it would be easier if it mobile readers had a compatible site to read.
