Bridge_Closed_Demolition_NY.JPGToby Talbot / The Associated PressThe Champlain Bridge, which connects New York to Vermont, will be demolished today. It was closed because of safety concerns. A report prepared for the New York Department of Transportation said a replacement bridge would cost at least $67 million and take 22 months to build.
Crown Point, NY -- The day of reckoning — and wrecking — has arrived for the Champlain Bridge.
The 80-year-old bridge between Crown Point, N.Y., and Addison, Vt., is to be brought down about 10 a.m. today with controlled explosions. The bridge was closed in October after engineers deemed it unsafe. Its demolition is expected to start a two-year process of building a replacement bridge.
About 3,400 vehicles used the bridge every day, and many of those motorists live in one state and work in the other. The closing has forced some to take 100-mile detours or ride crowded ferries to reach their jobs, while local businesses that rely on bridge traffic have seen revenues plummet.
