Obama details new anti-terror steps
Obama details new anti-terror steps

HONOLULU, Dec. 28 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama said Monday the administration is taking new measures to guard American travelers from terrorist attacks.

Issuing a statement from his Hawaii vacation retreat, Obama sought to calm Americans made jittery by a botched Christmas Day terror attack aboard a Northwest Airlines flight in which a Nigerian man allegedly attempted to ignite an incendiary device.

He said, "The American people should be assured that we are doing everything in our power to keep you and your family safe and secure during this busy holiday season."

Vowing to get to the bottom of incident in which Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 23, has been charged with attempting to destroy a flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Obama said, "A full investigation has been launched into this attempted act of terrorism, and we will not rest until we find all who were involved and hold them accountable."

The president said he has ordered "immediate steps to ensure the safety of the traveling public," including enhancing screening procedures for all flights and adding air marshals.

1. He is protecting the Homeland
from Al Qaeda terrorists hellbent on our destruction. We could not have elected a more able person for this job. I am so proud of my President!

2. Al Qaeda was created and maintained by the CIA.
Their job is to destablize the areas around Russia and China and enable the Anglo American axis to take over resource-rich areas.

3. More conspiracy theory nonsense.
Bin Laden was a CIA agent too right? There has never been mainstream news of the Al Qaeda-CIA connection.

8. I go to Huffington Post and Raw Story too
I do not rely on the internet for my news however. I read the New York Times and USA Today daily along with my local papers. The internet is no place to get your news.

20. Try something other than US media sources; nearly all are
subservient to the corporatocracy here. That is, if you truly want to be informed.
If you read/speak only English, please note that almost any media sources from the UK, for example, even the conservative press there, are 100 percent better than most of what we are exposed here to that passes for "information."
Ironically, Al Jazeera (English) is also better than most US media on global matters, but most here have difficulty accessing it other than via the internet.

25. Al Jazeera? No thanks.
That network is well known to have connections to both Hezbollah and Hamas. They are a propaganda outfit like the Fox News of the Middle East. I like Common Dreams and Raw Story for articles and Young Turks and Olbermann and Maddow for TV commentators.

29. You are confusing the Arabic speaking network
and the English-speaking version, where long-time respected former BBC and CNN anchors and reporters present the news and commentaries, in addition to locally-based reporters, many of whom are not even Arab. There is no comparison to Faux.
But, hey, don't let your closed mind hold you back.

27. Perhaps you should do your homework.
al_Qaeda was established in 1988 by Oama bin Laden. The US did not train any of them, but did funnel funds to them to aid in their fight against the Soviet Union.

It was during the Gulf War when he offered his help to the Saudi government and it was rejected in favor of US troops and support. Bin Laden thought having US forces on holy Suadi ground was an insult to Allah, which was when he turned against the US.

The idea that al-Qaeda is or ever was a CIA entity is absolutely ridiculous.

9. OK, I'll play. Yes, Bin Laden was trained by our CIA when he and the mujhadeen were fighting our
proxy war with the Soviets.

14. He is indeed dead
Pakistan newspapers reported both his death and his funeral back in 2002. But the story was ignored by MSM, who largely supported Bush's invasion of Iraq just a few months later.

And he was also responsible for 911.

28. Not sure what happened
I'm not an expert on 911. My belief is that even if the worst case scenario is true, we will never know. Time to move on and fight more winnable battles.

19. As far as I can tell, I'm not on record with an opinion on either of those issues
But it is pretty widely known that Bin Laden and the mujahideen were armed and trained by us to fight the Soviets in Afghanistan. Remember after Sept 11 they kept showing that file footage of him in Afghanistan wearing the turban and camouflage jacket? Remember, he was much younger and his hair and beard were not gray yet?

30. It is amply documented in mainstream sources. Al Qaeda means "the database"
http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2005/jul/08/july7.development

"Bin Laden was, though, a product of a monumental miscalculation by western security agencies. Throughout the 80s he was armed by the CIA and funded by the Saudis to wage jihad against the Russian occupation of Afghanistan. Al-Qaida, literally "the database", was originally the computer file of the thousands of mujahideen who were recruited and trained with help from the CIA to defeat the Russians. Inexplicably, and with disastrous consequences, it never appears to have occurred to Washington that once Russia was out of the way, Bin Laden's organisation would turn its attention to the west. "

The article is by Sir Robin Cook, Ex-British Foreign Secretary, and he wrote the month before he died.

There are many, many other mainstream sources.
