China shopping centre builds 'car park for women'
Source: BBC News

A shopping centre in China's Hebei province has built a car park with wider spaces that it says is designed especially to suit women drivers.

The women-only car park in Shijiazhuang city is also painted in pink and light purple to appeal to female tastes.

1. Disgusting!!! If women are such bad drivers, how come it's always
men who rear-end me on the road?

(No wise-crack answers, s'il vous plait.)

3. I've seen traffic in Shanghai
Edited on Mon Dec-28-09 03:49 PM by Lars77
If you ask me they all drive like women.

No, seriously, they have some major major traffic issues. 200 road deaths per day. I've seen how they drive in Shanghai and it's a miracle that more aren't killed. I've driven in Turkmenistan, Georgia (republic), Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and it doesen't come close.

4. Wider spaces mean cleaner clothes.
I hate brushing against other people's cars when I get in and out of mine.

2. NPR (?) had recent report on similar in Japan
The report described women-only sections of parking garages, with better security, etc. In some cases, stores would deliver packages to their parking area.

It reminded me of how things were when the first parking garages were being built in the US, particularly those with attendant/valet parking. Often marketed with safety as one of the advantages.

5. Maybe it's not that women are more likely to have
fender benders in parking their cars. I'm a full-time dad, and one of the things that I have problems with is negotiating the kids getting into and out of the car in tight spaces. My four year old boy always wants to throw the door open with great gusto. So far, I've managed to avoid damaging anyone else's car, but I can see where wider spaces would be some benefit.

11. Activated child safefy locks will stop that problem...
Most cars have them these days. You should check your owners manual.

14. We have them
I don't use them. I have it on the door for the baby, but at this point I'd kind of like to get the four going on five year old to use the door properly. He gets himself into and out of the car safely, but there have been some close calls.

9. When I first read the header I thought it was for women's safety reasons.

15. I could actually go along with this. If the big bad men
want to give me a better parking space, who am I to argue about it? I'm sure that is going to last only as long as the men can still find parking. When they can't, ladies watch out!

17. I wish they'd build mine - and I want it 15-20 steps to the front door all under a heated walkway
They can keep the "pink and light purple" shit, that's just nasty - sounds like the color palette in Mary Matalin' house x(

18. Next thing you know, they'll have hot girls at the gentleman's club to draw the men in.
It's funny that folks thought this was about a "women are crappy drivers" stereotype.
