What if we on DU started a campaign via DU, political blogs, our own email contact list, and any other means at our disposal to get people to withdraw money from banks and redeposit in credit unions?
Sort of a politically motivated, non-violent run on the banks.
I don't know how many people would be on board, or even if there are enough of us to make a difference if we did all get on board.
As far as effort goes, a trip to the bank followed by a trip to the credit union has to be low-effort compared to marching in the street.
Let me qualify that I doubt this will hurt the nation's economy, or I wouldn't suggest it. The fact is, as another OP points out, that 1% of the population controls about 42% of the wealth, and I doubt that that 1% is on our side. But if enough people participated, I'm sure it would show up as at least a blip on the books, and it might make a few people in key positions nervous.
Keep in mind that we're talking about the industry that created the house of cards economy that hurt the working class so badly, and the industry that accepted bailout money only to invest it in government bonds instead of lending it.
Just a thought.

2. Can do most of it by phone |
|
Call the CU, set up an account, go online and transfer your money into it, call the old TARP bank and tell them goodbye.
There are also many small banks that are in good shape who haven't taken public money and are also worthy of your business.
We can do by acts of will what the government did not allow the market to do - take out the failed institutions and give that business to better-run, responsible ones.

4. Mine is already in a credit union, and has been for many years. |
|
Good idea though, Goldstein.
Perhaps a DU bumpersticker to that effect would get the message out to the masses, as well?

a mortgage with a bank in Nebraska. We're letting an unemployed relative live in the house, and will be selling it as soon as we can. Until then, all of our reserves have been moved to a credit union account in Alaska, and our Nebraska bank balance is the minimum $100 required to avoid fees.

8. We have been members of our CU since 1984 |
|
We had to use a bank in Nebraska because there were no CUs in the little town where we lived (for 9 months) and because my employer there would not autodeposit to a CU.
Nothing beats a CU.
