Colorado can lead the way

Dear Hawkeye-X,

The circus we call the U.S. Senate left town last week, its ringleaders congratulating themselves on a heckuva show. But not everyone was entertained.
The Republicans turned in a peerless performance, demanding bipartisanship while doing everything in their power to prevent it. Some of the Democrats were just as shameless, proclaiming principles only after it was too late to stand on them. The only people left out of the act were the American public.

It doesn't have to be this way.

Here in Colorado, we know how to solve tough problems. I led the effort to win a Democratic majority--the first in 30 years. In the midst of a deep recession, we crafted an Economic Recovery Plan and built the broadest coalition in state history to pass it. We helped employers create good jobs, by educating our workforce, repairing our infrastructure, and making it easier for small businesses to grow.

We didn't resort to filibusters or backroom deals. We enforced open-meeting laws, required public testimony and an up-or-down vote on every bill, and televised legislative sessions for the first time ever. Our progress was the result not of political posturing or empty speechmaking but of hard work and an honest desire to make a difference--the same determination that drives most Coloradans every day.

The citizens of this state are not short on conviction. What we need are leaders with the courage to match

Sadly, too many public officials seem more interested in their own job security than in ours. That's why they spend so much time trolling for dollars in Washington and New York before flying over their constituents en route to fundraisers in Beverly Hills or Bel Air. They feign outrage at record foreclosure rates and unemployment lines--then wink at their donors when the cameras stop rolling.

The special interests they court are happy to oblige, lavishing millions on grateful senators in exchange for individual attention and the influence that comes with it. For a Wall Street banker, the price of a pliable politician is not just a bargain; it's a steal.

The only losers in this pay-to-play system happen to be the American people. The Senate is an exclusive club, off-limits to those who lack the right connections or can't afford the cover charge. It's no wonder so many ordinary families feel shut out; they are.

How do we change this? We reform campaign finance and curb the power of plutocrats. We jam the revolving door between lawmakers and lobbyists. We elect people who are willing to lead by example.

That's why I refuse to accept contributions from corporate interest groups. I am the only candidate in this race to have made this commitment. I will be the best senator money can't buy.

The other major candidates are collecting hundreds of thousands of dollars from the nation's biggest insurance, pharmaceutical and financial firms--the same industries that are blocking the reforms we need. It's not hard to follow the money: a drugmaker gets a tax break; a senator gets a television ad; we get the bill.

This game is not just expensive; it's obscene. In fact, it's no game at all. The issues at stake are literally matters of life and death. Every day, someone in Colorado dies because he or she cannot afford to treat or prevent an illness. Our economy is in crisis. Our planet is in peril. Yet it's business as usual on Capitol Hill.

That's not what we voted for. It's not what we deserve. This is no time to settle for the status quo; it's time to shake up the system.
In Colorado, that starts today. We can demand real reform, not just lip service on the Senate floor. We can show the powerbrokers and party bosses that in our state, the people rule. And by "people," I mean you.

Join us.

Sincerely,

Andrew Romanoff
Former Speaker of the House
Candidate for the U.S. Senate

Andrew is challenging Michael Bennet, a carpetbagger that doesn't belong in the U.S. Senate representing Colorado.

1. Thank you for any information you can impart.
I wasn't all that enthused with Romanoff in the Legislature, but I was happy he was challenging Bennet. Now Bennet is starting to redeem himself.

So much confusion, so little time.....

2. Andrew doesn't exactly have the rep for being progressive
himself.... I see his challenge to Bennet as a good thing, but am not convinced Romanoff would be any more left of center.

I am very worried about the meager gains Dems have made in Colorado, though... There are a lot of reflex voters in CO who could easily shift us back to the bad ole days, given the economy and Ritter's having been fairly weak.

BEEF ROMANOFF NOODLE CASSEROLE

1 lb. lean ground beef
1 clove garlic
1 tsp. salt
Black pepper to taste
1 can tomato sauce (15 oz. can)
8 oz. fine egg noodles
1/2 c. cream cheese
2/3 c. sour cream
6 scallions, chopped
1/2 c. grated Cheddar cheese

In skillet, saute beef and garlic on medium heat until no pink remains in meat. Break meat up as it cooks. Pour off excess fat. Add salt, pepper and tomato sauce. Simmer uncovered for 15 minutes.
Cook noodles; drain.

In bowl blend cream cheese, sour cream and scallions.

In a greased 2 quart casserole, place 1/3 of noodles, top with 1/2 of the cream cheese mixture, then 1/3 of the meat sauce. Repeat 2 more times using all ingredients. Top with Cheddar cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly. Approximately 8 servings. Doubles beautifully for big parties.
