yes I am having family over, and from really bad previous experience I have learned that YOU NEED to secure your computer against pesky relatives who like to download crap and not ask.

So on XP (and later versions of Windows) go to accounts and enable your guest account. Also place a password for your admin account. That will prevent lovely family from ahem downloading crap like Microsoft Messenger and not telling you.

I HATE to secure machines like Ft. Knox, but when there is no choice, there is no choice...

Ah the joys of having to learn these things...
