Tiger Woods Scandal Cost Shareholders up to $12 Billion, UC Davis Study Says

Shareholders of Nike, Gatorade and other Tiger Woods sponsors lost a collective $5 to $12 billion in the wake of the scandal involving his extramarital affairs, according to a new study by researchers at the University of California, Davis.

The losses are separate from and potentially much larger than damage to Woods own earnings.

Total shareholder losses may exceed several decades' worth of Tiger Woods' personal endorsement income, said Victor Stango, a professor of economics at the UC Davis Graduate School of Management and co-author of the study.

With fellow UC Davis economics professor Christopher Knittel, Stango looked at stock market returns for the 13 trading days that fell between Nov. 27, the date of the car crash that ignited the Woods' scandal, and Dec. 17, a week after the golf great announced his indefinite leave from the sport.

To assess shareholder losses, the economists compared returns for Woods' sponsors during this period to those of both the total stock market and of each sponsor's closest competitor.

2. oh well
Pretty sad that so much of the economy is tied to Tiger Woods' sex life. Maybe if I become that important, Pope Hitler Youth will bother to excommunicate me.

People and the things they did when they were younger - we really need to judge more on such things.

7. This mag cover hit the stands very soon after Woods hit the headlines

There are mountains of money green-lighted for promotional materials months if not years in advance. Wherever such money comes together at that level; there are doubtless performance & compliance clauses. Initially, allot of his commercial supporters hung with him as the story developed...it was what it developed into that caused a review of Tiger's contribution

8. That means his 'value' as spokesperson is a MULTIPLE of that.
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 02:00 AM by TahitiNut
They can't "LOSE" what they didn't already HAVE as a result of his endorsements.

(It annoys me how this gets framed... as though they had some steady-state 'RIGHT' to the value of his sponsorship.)

Did the rumors of your death become exaggerated? Would you like to tell These people you're not dead yet, just pinning for the fjords. :) Also, could you drop a gentle hint on how to use the advanced search feature?

19. Only the shareholders who sold during and downturns would have a loss.
And if they sold based on something they saw on the news they were idiots and probably got what they deserve.

Most of these companies have recovered to near (Nike) or above (Accenture) where they were on Nov 27th so for the people who invest in the companies for the long term they haven't lost anything. All of these stocks will still go up. Tiger Woods really isn't that significant and he'll be back.
