I would like to propose a new forum wherein our community can celebrate lives of those we've lost.
Over my years here I've seen some of our DU community pass by one means or another. Just yesterday we learned of the loss of Tangerine laBamba. There is still current a long thread of remembrances. In that thread, someone suggested we needed a wake and someone else replied that, indeed, that thread *was* a wake.

And so it was.

I'd like to propose we get a forum where these threads can ultimately be moved and kept active. We would even go back in the archives and have similar threads from years gone by moved there (and maybe made active again if that's possible). I think it would be better if such threads could start in an appropriate Big Forum and stay there for the thread's natural life before being moved to this new forum. That way the threads would not be missed by being in an obscure place.

I'm not exactly sure how to get a new forum started and I am certainly not sure if what I am proposing is even possible, but there it is.

If you can support such an idea, chime in. If you know the procedure for starting a new forum, please post that, too.

1. You need a certain number of folks to chime in conferring. Need some posts - not just rec's.
I think it's a good idea.

3. How to start a new DU Group - please read
(If you think this proposal for a new group is worthwhile, you need to post here and say so. We need 10 donating members to do so. At that point we will be considered. Herewith is Skinner's pinned thread describing the process.)

How to Suggest a DU Group

Edited on Wed Apr-27-05 07:10 AM by Skinner
One of the best things about DU Groups is that members have the ability to suggest new groups to the Administrators of Democratic Underground. If you wish to suggest a group, please follow this procedure:

1. Start one discussion thread in the forum of your choice to tell people about your idea for a DU Group.

2. In that thread, you must get responses from at least ten DU members who agree to be active participants in the suggested DU Group. All ten members to respond must have donor stars.

3. In that thread, members must agree on a proposed mission statement for the DU Group.

4. When enough members have signed on to join the group and have agreed on a proposed mission statement, one member must officially suggest the DU Group to a DU Administrator (Skinner, EarlG, or Elad), by sending an email. Please be sure to include a link to the thread where members have discussed the proposed Group.

5. The Administrators will consider the request and make a decision. The Administrators will either 1) Accept the Group as it is proposed, 2) Deny the Group outright, or 3) Ask for changes to the Group or its mission statement which would be necessary for its approval.

6. Once the suggested Group has been accepted by the Administrators, the Administrators will create a new DU Group in the "DU Groups" Category forum, and pin the mission statement of that Group to the top of that Group's forum.

If you are considering a DU Group on a controversial topic, the Administrators would appreciate if you contacted us before collecting your ten members, so we may discuss any sensitive issues. This courtesy will increase the chance that your Group is approved. Also, please be aware that proposed Groups that are redundant with existing DU Forums are unlikely to be approved.

If you have any questions, please contact a forum Administrator.

8. Good idea...
Many of us have been here since DU's inception. I arrived shortly after Stolen Election 2000 (under another name). I intend to be here for some time to come (great site for news and analysis and insight from a enlightened group who share the same values).

It stands to reason that some of us will depart during our tenures here. Many DUers have contributed so much to the site that perhaps some kind of commemorative forum could be established so we could continue to visit the wisdom of those who've gone before us.

9. Proposed Mission Statement
The DU Remembrance Group exists to allow members to celebrate the lives of DU members we've lost forever. Threads started anywhere on DU celebrating their lives will be moved here to stay in perpetuity. Joyful celebration of their lives is appropriate.

If you can better that, please give it a shot.

15. Call it the Rememberance Room
or something implying a *space*, not just another "group," where we can go, and remember all the fabulous folks we have gotten to laugh with, argue like hell with, celebrate and cry with.

Definitely a great idea. Count me in.

I'm not one of the most prolific posters, but I've been here since DU's inception and I too have grieved and continue to grieve over the loss of so many DUer's. RIP OLL. And I still miss you too, Andy, Jeff and Keph. :grouphug:

"I'd simply like to become a very good writer. A true writer. Someone who is able to translate the truth of her words into something that a reader would find entertaining, enlightening and valuable."

She certainly succeeded.

Annette said this in an interview regarding her novel, the one in which she used her given name. ;)

I'd love for it to be in a big forum where I can post, but there would be some protection in a DU Group that would prevent disruptions.

28. I think this is a great idea.
TLB is the first DUer to pass away with whom I had a personal connection, but I know many here mourn the loss of several others. A separate forum to remember these much-loved members would be a nice way to honor them.

31. One could always start a thread in the Bereavement Group
.
.
.

The main page of the Bereavement Group goes back almost three years, and the threads don't get locked or archived it seems.

So one could start an ***OFFICIAL REMEMBRANCE THREAD 2010***

or something along that line?

depending on volume - one could have a monthly or bi-monthly thread, with links to previous threads

jus' thinkin' out loud here . . .

34. I was unaware of that group ........
..... but it seems that it has quite a different focus. That is a support group for those who have suffered the loss of a person unknown to the other group members. It is to assist each other as they grieve. My notion for the group I'm proposing is to publicly celebrate the person who has left us.

Stinky. I know how you cared about TLB, as many did. There are others that have passed, and more that will. I think a "memorium" forum would be a terrific idea.

That said,, I am sorry for the loss of your friend.
