We bomb Afghanistan so well-educated Nigerians don't blow up aeroplanes over Chicago

A war against dangerous underpants

from Bob Ellis at The Drum

We bomb Afghanistan so well-educated Nigerians don't blow up aeroplanes over Chicago. Or that's the theory, it seems.

We bomb Afghanistan and parts of Pakistan so well-educated American-born Muslims don't shoot up their fellow soldiers in Fort Bragg. We bomb Iraq, and Gaza, and Afghanistan and Pakistan so well-educated British Muslims don't blow up Glasgow airport.

We have no alternative to this, it seems, in this necessary war, this just war on terror. This is why we're in Afghanistan, and why we have to be there for five or 15 more years, to stop well-educated people with exploding powder in their underpants from getting on planes in Oslo, or Paris, or Shannon, or Kingston, or Honolulu, or Cairns.

Makes a lot of sense, doesn't it. They clearly go to Afghanistan to learn how to put exploding powder in their underpants, and unless we bomb them there, they'll come over here, they'll get on a plane in Oslo...and they'll... Well, they'll...So we have to bomb them in...We have to bomb them in...Let me read that again.

Why are we in Afghanistan?

Oh yes, we're there to blow up people whose death will convince their relatives to treat their women better. That's it. That's why we're there. And to end world terrorism as well, of course. Can't forget that. We're fighting them there so they won't put on dangerous underpants elsewhere . . .

The bombing in Yemen was not related to the air incident.

6. In order to accept your position, I would have to ignore the confessions of the bombers
as well as the claims of Al Qaeda in Yemen. Why don't you give it up. You were wrong about Al Qaeda and our national security interests. That can happen to anyone, just accept it and move on. Don't ruin your credibility by pushing a bad position that has been proven wrong.

9. Again, the U.S. assisted bombings were not in response to the airplane incident
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 08:56 PM by bigtree
Also, there hasn't been any corroboration at all of the accused perp's claims of al-Qaeda 'training' in Yemen; or any contact with the 'al-Qaeda in Yemen' at all. Nor is there any evidence at all that the Fort Hood shooter was recruited or 'trained' by al-Qaeda to fire indiscriminately into a crowded room. You are repeating uncorroborated claims as 'truth'.

19. um er, we bombed yemen and they did send a well educated nigeran to kill us.
You seem to have the order of events a bit backwards. Perhaps what you meant was that we should bomb them some more so that they will send more well educated nigerians to kill us.

Have you ever played Whack-a-mole?

22. And how do you explain the fact that we bombed them before they bombed us?
Here is how I explain it: we did not bomb yemen in response to the crotch bomber. While the two bombings are related, one was not in response to the other. I do guarantee though that our endless game of lethal whack-a-mole will not make us safer and will continue to destabilize the muslim world and breed ever more eager young warriors for god, on both sides.

8. Oh see now, this is when I want to scream.
It makes no effing sense. It really, really doesn't. It's 1984. It's an endless loop of war, profiteering, blowback, and fear.

Excuse me while I explode my head.

11. K$R and some perspective:
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 08:56 PM by amborin

Some Perspective, Please

With the nation freaking out about "some loser who got on a plane with a bomb in his underwear," Firedoglake notes, it's helpful to offer some perspective on the dangers we face.

Counting right-wing violence, 16 people in the U.S. have died of terrorism this year. 45,000 died because they lacked health insurance and 600 died from salmonella poisoning. Health care, it's clear, is beyond us; next up, salmonella.

12. There you go again, bigtree, Undermining our great nation and its mission to save the world
from terror.

K & R

I love the one I read in another column that called him "The Ball Sack Bomber".

Next thing you know, they'll be eating packets of nitroglycerin or some other explosive then slamming themselves into the floor of the plane. The imagination of the committed terrorist knows no bounds. But have no fear, the TSA is working on a machine that will detect this before the passenger gets OFF the plane.

20. 11th dimensional jui-jitsu chess!
I'm sure that it never occurred to al qaeda, if it is even any sort of coherent organization anymore, that if they started shit from yemen we would go after them in yemen. So they probably don't have any plan for that. And of course a military presence of the number one heathen crusader nation on the arabian peninsula won't destabilize any other freakishly religious and nationalistic and xenophobic nearby nations.

18. " our national security interests" which is one reply here
We really need to think about just what that means. Could it be the same as corporate interests who after all created the very idea and promoted the war on terror.

Anyone alive with one brain cell working knows that if we were invaded in the US for our resources we would fight back as well.

All we have done is create people who want revenge after we have bombed them into blood and rubble and call them the terrorists.
