Wingnut former state AG reviews Avatar; calls it "shallow and false"
Edited on Tue Dec-29-09 10:05 PM by proud2BlibKansan
Phill Kline, movie critic

avatarFormer Kansas Attorney General Phill Kline, who now teaches law in Lynchburg, Va., saw “Avatar” and went away more than unimpressed, calling its visuals stunning but its story “borrowed” and its message “shallow and false.” Writing on the Web site Renew America, Kline said: “The only way to reconcile a godless Darwinistic worldview with a deeply spiritual American culture is to convert environmentalism into religion.” He saw the planet Eywa’s warriors as “Freudian expressions of the left’s desire for that all-powerful environmental protecting global police force,” concluding, “Call me unenlightened, but when I see a Marine battle an anvil-headed beast called forth by a planet-god — I root for the U.S. Marine.”

Phill Kline is the former Attorney General of Kansas who is, to date, the only Attorney General / prosecutor ever to obtain abortion records and formally charge both George Tiller and Planned Parenthood.

1. He got it.
My first thought coming out of Avatar was that it was a fine motion picture, but it was too bad Cameron hated America. ;)

2. They weren't Marines. They were mercenaries.
ala Blackwater. He explained that when he first landed on Pandora, saying that they were all former Marines, Army, etc.

And Earth-based religions where around long before Christianity, Mr. Kline.

14. What's the difference?
They both blindly kill and destroy. Orders are orders.

3. Shallow and False...
A shock and awe campaign on an occupied planet to steal what is under their soil. Yeah that's as false as it gets

For shame on those crazy Navi, living happily without strip malls and wall street and banks.

4. I guess he missed the part about the Marines invading & destroying the Na'Vi's home
And that that particular Marine was used as cannon fodder, crippled, then spit out to fend for himself, without being allowed to avail himself of the then-available procedure to restore the use of his legs - because it cost too much.

Kline isn't just ignorant & unenlightened, he's bigoted & religiously brain-damaged.

7. Corporate mercenaries.
First of all, they were former Marines, on Pandora, mercenaries in the pay of the mining corporation.

Avatar is not a deep movie, so it is to be expected that a right-wing Christian extremist would see the message in the show. Yup, is is an anti-corporate, anti-imperialist, pro-environment, 'leave other people' alone message movie.

Hey, Cameron is mostly advancing a new technology for theater movies; the story and characters were certainly good enough for the mass audience he needed to pay for his experiment. I thought it was a good, fun film.

But no kidding, the message was about what you would expect from Cameron: a liberal message that everyone can understand.

9. They are all borrowed stories with shades of Greek Tragedy: oppressors, protectorates...
Life, love, champions, comedic relief, death, castle intrigue, turning great tides with progressive resolve but hey! - I know how upset this guy still is being pissed a twister didn't pick up the house of his enemy and drop it on someone he hated

12. Then it must be pretty good!
A must see if it pisses of jokes like this guy.

He can't get that the "deeply spiritual America" is leaving his hateful, mindless, patriarchal religious fanaticism behind either; survey after survey show this.
