Burton called for Napolitano's ouster because, as he sees it, her comment on Sunday that "the system worked" means Americans may no longer have "confidence" in her abilities.

Think about that. A high-ranking cabinet official should quit, Burton believes, because of a three-word phrase that was entirely reasonable in context. A so-called "gaffe" is more important, the argument goes, than actual on-the-job performance.

This is terribly nutty. Then again, we are talking about Dan Burton -- a man who used his role as chairman of the House Government Reform Committee back in the '90s to fire a bullet into a "head-like object" (reportedly a melon) in his backyard to test whether former White House counsel Vince Foster was murdered.

Americans have every reason to have lost confidence in Burton. Maybe he should resign?

being so (way TOO) lowkey about various issues. I recognize they're on recess, but if the rethugs can represent, why can't we?

39. Why doesn't one of those commentators have the guts
to ask the republican who is spouting this crap to give them one good reason and for that to be a sensible reason, for asking her to resign. If Obama or she listens to this s**t than they are worst than the republicans.

I would tell republicans...SEE look what you did in eight years. SEE what we are doing to clean it up. SEE the public doesn't trust you anymore.

So go back in the whole you crawled out of and shut up.

11. He has a primary opponent this year
a rather credible one too, maybe donate to that person because the general election is not the place to beat him...
But that district he could have a challenger from the RIGHT as well.
Right of Burton, that is scary, huh?

6. Regardless of burton, Napolitano should resign or be fired by BO.
Napolitano's agency screwed up its very reason for existing even when the evidence was shoved multiple times in their face. If BO was smart he should axe her before the start of the new year. Napolitano can't even get her story straight. BO can do much better, really!

Really, what control do Obama or Janet Napolitano have over the Amesterdam airport? Answer: None.

27. So Napolitano runs the CIA now?
Look, obviously there are some problems with the system that they need to work on but this isn't time to change leadership. It's not like someone personally warned Sec'y Napolitano that some yob was going to try and blow up a plane.

32. DHS is supposed to be the focal point for ALL intelligence gathering, specially of this type.
Napolitano's agency isn't doing its job; DHS was formed so that what happened, wouldn't happen.

33. If incidents like this one are the threshold for demanding resignation
We'll be going through DHS heads quicker than most people go through underwear. Basically every time a terrorist attack happens anywhere and American interests are even tangentially involved.

34. And the CIA and FBI are separate agencies from DHS.
Obviously, coordination and communication between those agencies needs to be addressed but I'm not about to demand Napolitano's resignation because the CIA failed to tell her something.

35. Again, DHS was formed so what happened on 911 wouldn't happen again.
It has happened again with the father of the perpetrator notifying US multiple times that his son was going to commit a heinous act against our country. The DHS system is broken and Napolitano is in charge. Enough said.

If one undone appointment to DHS inhibits dire info from getting through the system, we're in far more trouble than I can imagine.

43. Your posts are seriously uninformed...
DHS can only act upon information that it receives from the CIA. If the CIA (surprise, surprise) deigns to not share information with another agency, then there's really not much that DHS or anybody else can do about it.

Obama is right. There clearly needs to be some systemic changes so that intelligence and security agencies share information readily and on a regular basis. And when they have that in place, they need to share it with security entities in other countries. That part of the DHS charter has NEVER been pursued aggressively because of turf issues in Washington. If Obama can do something about that, it would be the single-most important step he could take toward improving security.

36. Is namecalling of bonafide members a no-no?
I don't like Dan Burton but he has some good points. He was also against what went down at Waco TX.

I saw Napolitano on Meet the Press. She was embarrassing. She had an odd programmed smile on her face. ICK! She should be fired. She never was competent for that particular job. There was information from the terrorist's father. It didn't go through the Homeland Security channels or if it did it wasn't acted upon. Homeland Security FAILED.

All airlines were notified, beefed up security.

The media took her words out of context, as usual.

38. What worked?
The terrorist's father had notified the US EMBASSY that his kid was planning something evil. Yet he got on an American airplane and but for the intervention of a passenger or two, might have set a plane on fire and killed 300 people!
