I was denied coverage for a pre-existing condition today
Well I signed my family up for AFLAC supplamental insurance today. Something I wish I had last year when I was batteling breast cancer. I also found out, that the only thing that I can be covered for is "accident insurance" not the "hospitalization" or their "cancer" insurance because of my pre existing condition even though I finished treatment in March of 09. I have to wait 5 years.

I can understand having to wait for the cancer insurance but since you can be hospitalized for more things than cancer I find that a bit wierd.
But anyway.
Just more fun in the sun!

1. Your example is the reason that the house and senate version have to allow pre-existing conditions
to be covered immediately, not 5 years from now

3. The OP NEVER even implied that, and even with your sarcasm, the fact remains that
allowing pre-existing conditions not to take effect for 5 years for adults will hurt a lot of people

6. I never suggested they did. I'm simply pointing out that killing the bill will hurt the OP.

17. The bills had provisions for allowing interim government insurance for those
with preexisting conditions until the bans kicked in.

5. No, but the bill might make the problems even worse
My entire group plan was canceled by insurance company, leaving me in roughly the same problem.

Depending on just what makes it into the final bill, things might actually get even worse for those of us of a certain age with pre-existing conditions.

15. That happened to my sister when her insurance co went bankrupt.
She had a preexisting condition and couldn't get any kind of insurance. But dammit, keep government out of my health care, she says. I say what health care? She is a Rushbot, Beckerhead, Hannitized example of a RWer if there ever was one -- even though it's against her own best interests. It doesn't make sense to me but who needs logic when we have Rush to think for us, eh?

16. Should tell her she doesn't have to worry about the govt getting involved in her health care.
She don't have one.

7. This is your response to a cancer survior with a good point to
make? The OP told a story. Dripping sarcasm is an interesting take for you, who have used personal heart string tales of Insurance to make your points. What do you hope to achieve with such farting in church, your two rule books, and 'emoticons'? What do you get out of such a statement?
The OP did not even say anything like what you imply was said.

10. Join the club. I had bypass surgery in 2003, found NO ONE will insure
people who have had such surgery except Blue Cross, who offerred lousy coverage at $800 a month, just for me.

I have since found excellent coverage sponsered by the state of PA,for a little over 1/4th of that.
Welcome.

12. My wife may be in a similar situation.
We have been off insurance for 6 months and are starting 1/1/10 on a plan through her job. We just got the policy booklet yesterday. Under pre-existing conditions, it says that any condition that we may have had in the six months prior to the plan's start date that we saw a doctor about will be considered a pre-existing, not-covered condition for the first 12 months we are on the plan. My wife had cancer surgery back in 2005. She has had follow up tests since her original chemo & radiation, but has not had any treatments. Looking back on last year, I see that she had a routine 6-month visit to her oncologist in August. I guess that means her oncologist (or any oncologist) won't be covered on this new plan for 12 months. I also assume any treatments, medications or therapies she receives that are related to oncology will also not be covered for 12 months.

Now, if she had skipped the appointment in August - ie: not had her routine check-up - I'm guessing her new plan would cover her oncology from Day One.

Nice, eh?

19. Is this Long/Short-Term Disability insurance or regular health insurance?
If it's disability insurance, I can see why there's a waiting period too after treatment for a serious illness.

20. It does take 5 years with recurrence to be considered "cured".
I wish you the best. Mom had a mastectomy in 1993, she has dementia now but she beat the cancer.
