You're kidding, right?
How about death of journalism as symbolized by the death of Walter Cronkite?

in that context, you're probably right. How about editing your subject line? I guess we could think of a lot of things the media went ape shit over.

3. Death and memorial of Wellstone, and the ongoing fallout from that. |
|
I might have tunnel vision on that one, though.

7. Good list except for MJ's death. It's a Sesame Street thing: which one doesn't belong. |

Obviously the media obsession thing might be argued, but clearly the things on this list had major and long-lasting effects on people's lives.
So, would the real #5 please stand up. Anthrax? Improvements in fighting cancer? Completion of the Human Genome project in 2000? Run-up of oil prices?

8. East Asian tsunami number 9?!? |
|
MJ's death a bigger story than the Boxing Day Tsunami? Wowzer...
This looks like a very US-centric list

9. I hope your list isn't numbered in the order or importance because |
|
Bush's (s)election(s) was one of the longest-running disasters of the decade. And, there are so many stories that emanated from BushCo that would qualify as top stories that he almost deserves a list by himself.

The Election of a Black President...didn't think I would live long enough to see it.
the only other events even close would be Katrina - watching a city disappear before my eyes while our government sat on their hands...even in 3rd world countries the surviviors are rescued within a couple of days...our leaders let us watch as people died for over a week.
