6. So you can do what?
Have a pogrom?

Let me politely suggest you don't want to start a trend of targeting private citizens for their politics. Break that taboo and it's only a matter of time before they come for you for what you are.

10. Um, to avoid them? Has it dawned on you that bigots
are often dangerous, and knowing who is prejudiced against you can save your life. Bigots are the ones who do pogroms, and some of the same people behind 8 have been involved in the push for actual pogroms in Uganda. So you have it all backwards.

Avoiding those bigoted against you in medical treatment can be a huge advantage. Can you imagine that? Why should one pay some prejudiced dentist thousands of dollars? Why not check that list?
Not sure what your idea of productive is. You made snark about door to door sales, when there are issues medical, educational, financial and many other reasons to know who is contributing to this crap. Clearly, you had not thought of any of that, and do not like being challenged.

22. Actually i looked in the community in which I grew up (Yorba Linda)
and recognized many of the donars as friends of the family and people I respected as a child. Glad to see many of the people I respected the most aren't on the list, but it is a bit discombobulating, if not surprising.

I am a Mormon, after all.

I live in Florida now, however, and would not donate to such a movement here.

I wonder if you thought when talking about entire communities and door to door sales that every community has GLBT residents that use the maps of that particular area. Also those who support us would like to have such reference.
Why should entire communities not be on such a map, just because I myself do not live in each? You used it.

Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 08:18 PM by havocmom
http://www.city-data.com/

Then click a state link, then a city to get data on industry, employment stats by industry and gender, income, services, average commute times, education level by percent of population, different faith/church attendance (a biggy to me as I am very bigoted against communities with high percentage of fundy churches), crime stats & law enforcement info, weather by month (temp, precip, humidity, wind speed, snowfall, sunshine), medical facilities, and.... % of vote form Kerry/Bush in 2004 presidential year.

If you are really looking for information to help you find a place you might like to live, one would think the city-data site would be a useful tool to check out. If you just want to snoop at where Archie Bunker has cousins, I guess the map link in OP might do. Problem is, your next door neighbors can change pretty fast. Community leanings seem a safer gage.

21. Many of these people run businesses
Those who don't work in them. They take LGBT money with a smile on their face, then they turn around and use that money to fund anti-gay legislation. There is no reason we should continue to fund our own oppression. Tools like eightmaps and Base8 allow us to know who is working against us, so we can choose to spend our money elsewhere.

There's not a thing wrong with that.

41. Allow me to educate you.
I maintain Base8, a searchable database of donors to all publicly-known, anti-gay ballot measures (CA Prop 8, AZ Prop 102, FL Amendment 2, ME Q1, and more).

The completed categories we've released so far are few, because we take great pains to research every record in order to present the most accurate information available.

With that disclaimer aside, let's talk about the "morality" of exposing anti-civil rights bigots.

I won't even touch the effectiveness of the Montgomery Bus Boycott (nor the way DUers generally salute it as among the finest forms of exercising First Amendment rights). Rather, I'll just quote the http://news.lavenderliberal.com/base8-faq/">Base8 FAQ (which I wrote, so I can quote as much of it as I like):
Q. Why are you doing this?

A. Because a lot of people — mainly those of us who have been harmed, badly, and in real and measurable ways — want to know who is funding our oppression, and who is helping further the recognition of our equality.

We were (and continue to be) profoundly affected by Proposition 8, and by the continuing tide of anti-gay legislation and bigotry across the United States. We’re tired of funding our own oppression by giving our money to people who turn around and donate it to anti-gay ballot measures, anti-gay causes, anti-gay organizations, anti-gay political parties, and anti-gay politicians. We know there are many millions of people just like us, and that is why we created Base8.

Ultimately, Base8 forces bigots to be honest with their clientele. They will no longer be able to smile at their gay customers and clients, take their gay money, and then use it to fund laws that keep LGBT people second-class citizens. They’ll have to drop the pretense that they “love” gay people while they actively work to deny us equal rights.

They can’t have it both ways. They can’t pretend LGBT people don’t deserve equal rights while expecting us to still be their customers, clients and “friends.” If they want our support, they cannot treat us as their inferiors.

. . .

We just want to know that if we go to Restaurant XYZ, we can avoid being served by the one person in the place who contributed to stripping us of our equal rights. (Not only do we not want to give someone like that our money, but if somebody is that homophobic, we don’t want to worry about them spitting — or worse — in our food. Seriously.)

Mind you, we don’t boycott entire companies just because one low-level employee donated to hate. When we decide whether or not to do business with a company, we take into consideration the position(s) of the donor(s), how many donors there are (on each side of the war), and, of course, whether or not the company itself has a good (or bad) track record of diversity and inclusion.

For example, you’ll find a large number of law firms with great diversity policies (which we recognize and detail here), but which, sadly, employ a few anti-gay lawyers. Naturally, we would definitely do business with a LGBT-supportive law firm, but we’d never want to use an anti-gay lawyer. (Again, not only would we not want to give him or her our money, but we would never have complete trust or confidence such a person would handle our affairs with our best interest at heart.)

We also wouldn’t boycott a hospital with one anti-gay doctor — we just wouldn’t want that doctor sticking his hands in our bodies.

One thing that will prompt us to write off an entire company is an anti-gay donation (or other anti-gay activism) on the part of a business owner, company executive, director, major stockholder, or other person of great influence or benefit. Two of the first examples that come to mind: Doug Manchester’s hotel operations, and Cinemark (Century, CinéArts, and Tinseltown Theater movie theatre chains).

. . .

As far as we’re concerned, a donation is nothing more than a statement of support for a cause. The amount does not matter; the donor is on record as denying us our birthright as American citizens.

. . .

Q. You’re making us targets! You want to intimidate us!

A. That’s not our intent. In fact, we explicitly warn visitors to Base8 that we neither advocate nor condone any malicious behavior on their part with any information they find here. Do not use any of the information from Base8 to stalk, harass, intimidate or otherwise harm any person(s) or property. If you do so, you do it without our support or consent. Furthermore, we fully support any legal actions taken by those physically or materially harmed by any individual using information found here.

That said: We wish merely to provide LGBT individuals and their supporters the opportunity to stop funding their own oppression. For years we have been giving our hard-earned cash to people who then turn around and use it to fund anti-gay legislation like Proposition 8. We don’t have to do that any longer. We have other options.

And since our votes don’t seem to matter, our choice is to vote with our wallets.

Q. Boycotts are illegal/immoral/McCarthyism!

A. Boycotts are a perfectly legal consumer action which involve individuals or groups voluntarily abstaining from buying products or using the services of a particular business, often for political reasons. Probably the most famous boycott is the Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-56). No one is legally obligated to patronize any particular business.

Q. You’re destroying my/our livelihood!

A. Like anyone else, we have the right to determine where we spend our money. If we discover that certain individuals to whom we give our money are using that money against us — funneling it into anti-gay legislation, for example — we have every right to choose not to give them our money. Just as you have the right to fund whatever ballot initiatives you wish, we have the right to stop funding our own oppression and destruction.

In our opinion, if your actions cause people to stop patronizing your business, you’re destroying your own livelihood.

Q. You’re targeting us for defending marriage / participating in democracy / standing up for what we believe in / etc.!

A. You can “defend marriage” / participate in democracy / stand up for what you believe in / etc., all you want. You have every right to do so and nobody is stopping you. However, some people are choosing to stop funding your efforts with their money, and we are merely providing them information which will assist them in doing so… or not, as they prefer. We’re not demanding anyone boycott anything. It’s still (last time we checked) a free country.

Q. How dare you put my information online? This is an invasion of my privacy!

A. We didn’t. Every last piece of information you see in Base8 was already online, and publicly accessible. We merely gathered it all from various sources and put it into Base8.

If you have a problem with that, we suggest you take it up with the many sources the information came from — public donor records from the state, school alumni records, your church newsletters, etc., etc., etc.

Besides, if you don’t have anything to hide, what are you worried about?

And if you’re ashamed of donating to bigotry, or feel remorse, maybe you should have thought about that before you made your donation. (But congratulations on feeling shame or remorse — that’s a sign there’s hope for you!)

Q. How would you like it if someone made a database with all of the “No on 8″ people in it?

A. Go ahead. The donor information for Proposition 8 is available at cal-access.ss.ca.gov/…, and the donor information for every other anti-gay ballot measure of note here can be found in Our Sources . If you want to spend some 18 hours a day, seven days a week for the next year extracting the records, formatting them into something readable, and researching every last one, nobody is stopping you. Knock yourself out.

. . .

Q. Why can’t you respect our privacy?

A. We’re the ones who should be asking you that question: Why can’t you respect our privacy, and butt out of our lives?

In any case, per California law (and the law of all other states whose anti-gay donors are listed here), in a voter-approved initiative, donations to ballot initiatives are not a private matter.

As U.S. District Judge Morrison England said: “If there ever needs to be sunshine on a particular issue, it’s a ballot measure.”

The People — and, like it or not, we are “The People” just as much as you are (even if we don’t get to vote on your marriage… yet) — deserve to know who is funneling money into these measures.

. . .

You can either read and learn about private citizens being targeted by the bigots on this map and maybe do a little reading on Prop 8 or you can accuse the targets of bigotry of having "a progmom." Your assertion is so off base. Maybe your marriage and your civil rights can be voted on next. Like that idea?

But I guess if no one's persecuting YOU, you don't really see the point, huh?

9. Self-defense, in many cases.
For example, searching for my area shows one donor lists himself as a professor at a local college (he is business faculty, I recognize the name.) If I were a gay person taking classes at that school, I'd certainly want to steer clear of his- if he cared enough about denying their rights to spend money on it, could he be trusted to be fair with gay students? I wouldn't bet my GPA on it, were I in that student's shoes.

26. Amazing how many "homemakers"
have thousands of dollars to throw around to eradicate the rights of others. Of course many of those "homemakers" happen to be married to CEOs of corporations--CEOs who apparently think they can hide their donations by having their wives make them. Then there are those who flat out lie about who they are (like claiming they're an "accountant" when they're the owner of the company). It's interesting how all these "moral values" types lie, deceive and obscure to hide what they're doing.

43. What's your issue, exactly?
Did you donate money to an anti-gay ballot measure? Did you walk the streets with pro-Prop 8, pro-Question 1, etc., signs? Are you Maggie Gallagher, or one of her minions?

If your answer is "No," then you have nothing to worry about.

Frankly, the only people I've run up against who howl and moan about making public the names of anti-gay donors/endorsers are the ones with the most to hide.

Nope, dudie, I'm not accusing you of a thing. I'm asking you 1) if you are anti-marriage equality, and 2) if the reason you rail against open, clear, transparent (see also: "sunshine") campaign funding has anything to do with donations/activism/whatever you would like to hide.

I am asking, not accusing.

Edited on Thu Dec-31-09 09:16 AM by FreakinDJ
Defenders of Proposition 8 do object, citing that the exposure will subject witnesses and litigants to the "potential for intimidation" and that perhaps the "right to a fair trial will be undermined.".... Indeed, some potential witnesses have indicated that they will not be willing to testify at all if the trial is broadcast or webcast beyond the courthouse," Cooper wrote. He also cited a history of the court prohibiting cameras from trial proceedings.''

88. This is just a "Legal Opinion"
Walker’s request wouldn’t seem so unusual, given the immense interest in the Prop. 8 case. But if Social Security is the third rail of American politics, cameras in the court is responsible for electrocuting many a well-meaning federal judge. The national Judicial Conference thinks cameras shouldn’t be allowed in district court proceedings, and many circuits around the country — including the Ninth — have followed that line. Just last week, the Seventh Circuit chided a Peoria, Ill., jurist for allowing cameras into a civil proceeding there.

So, if Walker is really serious, it appears he would need special permission from the Ninth Circuit Judicial Council to pull it off (a group which may not be totally unsympathetic). Same-sex marriage supporters don’t have any problems with it.

But the Yes on 8 crowd sure does.

“Given the highly contentious and politicized nature of Proposition 8 and the issue of same-sex marriage in general, the possibility of compromised safety, witness intimidation, and/or harassment of trial participants is very real,” wrote attorney Charles Cooper (who we've just profiled on CalLaw this evening).

http://legalpad.typepad.com/my_weblog/2009/10/on-prop-8-case-judge-walker-is-ready-for-his-closeup.html

No matter how well intended it may be, IF ANYONE on that MAP was to claim they were harrassed, vandalized, intimdated, or otherwise "Felt Uncomfortable" you have just made the case for the Prop 8 Proponents arguements to EXCLUDE TV cameras from the court room

Sorry - that was the reason I said I didn't feel the map was a "Good Idea" and I could not support it. At least not a good idea at this time when the "Decision is PENDING". That opinion has nothing to do with my feelings about Prop 8 or Gay Marriage.

Does that help clear things up for you

Lets say for instance the the court rules in favor of allowing cameras in the court room. And the court's proceedings equally goes in favor of the plaintiffs.

But as a result of this map the defendants are able to claim they were unable to recieve a "Fair Trial" because their witnesses were intimdated by the viewers of this MAP. They will file an appeal which MOST certainly will go before the US Supreme Court. Do you think you'll have the "Favorable votes" on the Supreme Court after 8 years of Bush appointees?

"I got about two dozen e-mails and hate phone calls," said Mr. LiMandri, who lives in San Diego. "They were calling me Nazi, homophobe, bigot. I tried to engage people once or twice - I said that Proposition 8 had nothing to do with being bigoted, it was about preserving marriage - but people don't want to engage on the issue."

As a lawyer, however, Mr. LiMandri knew what to do with the e-mails.

"I collected them and turned them in to the lawsuit," he said.
http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2009/mar/23/pestered-prop-8-donors-file-suit/

So my question is for this brief monent of feeling justified in exposing the Prop 8 Supporters is it worth risking those consequences? The opposition has already made the case that allowing cameras will intimidate the opposition witnesses, and the final determination has yet to be handed down. Should there be any violence directed towards the prop 8 supports on this map - you bet that will become evidence in his appeal.

BTW: I'm not on the map nor did I vote FOR prop 8

January 29, 2009
"There has been a systematic effort to intimidate and harass donors to the Prop 8 campaign," said Ron Prentice, Chairman of ProtectMarriage.com. "The latest example of this is the publication by our opponents of 'Google Maps' showing the home or office location of Yes on 8 contributors. (see www.eightmaps.com) The message of this harassment is unmistakable - 'support traditional marriage and we will find you.' We are asking the federal court to stop this harassment and enjoin the state from forcing further disclosure of our contributors until the court can assess the constitutionality of California's campaign disclosure rules as applied to our committee."

99. You're quoting Chuck Limandri?! Allow me to educate YOU.
It was bad enough you put forth the lame-ass argument of Charles Cooper (the lawyer who said "I don't know" when asked by Judge Walker what the tangible threat of SSM is), but defending this bullshit with the likes of LiMandri is just too much.

Let me tell you all about Charles Salvatore LiMandri:

From Base8 (mine, mods, so no quote limitation):
LiMandri, Charles S.

NATL ORG/MARRIAGE (ANTI-GAY)
LAW OFFICES OF CHARLES S. LIMANDRI
RANCHO SANTA FE CA 92067

CARLSBAD CA 92008
08/18/08 - $200.00 - 1362593-INC1086 - Filed: 11/24/08

Oh, poor little put-upon Chucky Limandri!

"Okay, so (the Washington Times) totally make(s) Mr. LiMandri sound like a mere citizen who happens to be a lawyer, right? Well here's the thing: Mr. LiMandri is a far-right player who serves as the general counsel for Maggie Gallagher's National Organization for Marriage group, an outfit that was crucial in passing Prop 8. During the run up to the election, Mr. LiMandri publicly spoke out against all the supposed ills that unchecked gay marriage would bring to the Golden State. He pulled out all of the fearful stops in an http://www.signonsandiego.com/uniontrib/20081019/news_lz1e19limandr.html">editorial that he was able to place in The San Diego Union Tribune. And here, look at this pre-election article from the Catholic Legatus magazine, in which LiMandri shows that he was placing the 'persecution' card well before this new lawsuit... It should be noted that the above article is proudly linked to on the website of Mr. Limandri's law firm -- a website where one can find a whole history of 'pro-family' activity, as well as links to some of the nation's most anti-gay groups (including resoundingly discredited researcher Paul Cameron). ..." - Much more from Good As You

"Other than the obvious hypocrisy - campaign finance disclosure laws came as a result of a voter initiative - The Washington Times, not exactly a paragon of fair and responsible reporting, forgot to mention that Mr. Limandri serves as general counsel for the National Organization For Marriage, has written a number of anti-gay articles for local newspapers and christian magazines, as well as The Family Research Council and Focus On The Family. Mr. Limandri also represented four San Diego firefighters who sued the city because they were allegedly forced to participate in a gay pride parade in 2007 and claimed sexual harassment." - NGBlog

And it's kind of difficult to complain about your privacy being invaded when James Hartline names you one of 2006's San Diego Christian Activists of the Year. (We don't hear any whining about that).

Lesson for you, FreakinDJ: Know who the hell you're defending before you start pulling poor, little shat-upon "victims" out of your... hat. You really shot yourself out of the sky with this one.

These fundies WANT the case to go to the SCOTUS - they Know they can win there. Bush has stacked the court in their favor. And God forbid this case set precedence for the whole country.

The Supreme court with the Bush appointees have very clearly signaled which way they will vote and unless you wish to go around inviting friends and relatives to your CIVIL UNION Ceremony for the next 50 or so years, then you'll persuade your friends to take down the link

I'm done discussing this - because you keep making their case for them

104. Here's where you're clueless.
If we win Olson-Boies, we have a precedent to set the wheels in motion for the rest of the country. If we lose, the loss is California-specific -- no harm, no foul. Ask Ted Olson himself about that.

Of course, I wouldn't expect you to know the first thing about it, as it is painfully obvious you have not done a lick of homework.

You can be "done discussing this," but you're still dead wrong -- about a lot of things.

By the way, I'm married, not civil-union-ized.

"Take down the link"? Why? Show me one thing that's factually inaccurate, and I will correct it. Otherwise, I can only assume the truth, for whatever reason, makes you very, very uncomfortable.
