Ah quake and pets
Today I saw something really funny. My Nanday RAN under the table when one of the many quakes hit. I felt one, I fear he felt more and was a tad scared. But I swear, the bird practiced the birdie version of duck and cover.

These are the times I wonder just how intelligent they are and we don't give them enough credit for it.

I have pointed a few times just how more intelligent than we believe these animals are. Well just wanted to share another one.

Oh and me, got caught at a red light. The car rocked, and I went, WHO HIT ME? Then it hit me, was a quake.

Anything fall in the house?

7. same malcontent who un-recs every newly posted thread?
just a guess. Second guess is it is a malcontent not content with the fact that Skinner didn't give in to the tantrums re the unrec option.

Just sit on the latest page and refresh often. Open latest posts in a new tab. Dollars to donuts they will have unrec or two within 60 seconds of appearing.

Yeah, some nights I can't sleep and need entertainment

15. You should time the fastest ones and we post a thread on them,
and watch it be unrec'd. :)

25. I think there are at least two people that are running a script to unrec every thread posted.
I don't know this, but it does seem that there is a minimum two unrecs for any thread no matter how innocuous or universal.

4. My whole crew and I must be weird.
I live 2 miles from the Tijuana border and never felt a thing, and none of my 4 cats acted anxious or strange at any point.

Weird.

with a limited hearing frequency range can't hear.

23. Oh, there are. Definitely.
My cats react to things way out of my hearing range all the time. But they didn't react at all today to anything that I noticed -- earthquake or otherwise.

12. I am twenty miles north from where you are
chances are though that you are on Basalt, and I was on sand... sub soil has a lot to do with this.

I know, in Mexico City where my parents live, if the damn thing is felt by them, it is over seven in the Richter scale

24. Very good point.
Looking at the terrain map, I very probably am on bedrock here. I never thought of that.

I lived in Normal Heights until just about 3 years ago. We were kinda-sorta neighbors! :hi:

during an earthquake. I remember just before an earthquake struck when I lived in San Francisco many years ago, my cats were running around like crazy. I remember thinking, "How are those cats shaking this building?" :duh:

they are like having a five year old, with the mental age of a three year old.

My favorite... HE LIKES the sound of USB devices ploink, well one morning we woke up to the sounds... he has hooking and unhooking a device.

Edited on Wed Dec-30-09 08:38 PM by Donnachaidh
It never failed, he'd start up with a bloodcurdling HOWL that woke EVERYONE in the apt complex up, seconds before anything hit. And he'd set off all the other dogs too.

17. It is part of the arrogance and the hubris of mankind to assume that all the other creatures are
inferior to him, and are here to serve him.

They do not realize that we are here to serve and take care of them!!

18. Trust me I am aware of that
though this morning they were unusually LOUD and Obnoxious and their breakfast was not enough to quiet them down

Of course after the quake it is easy to connect dots. They were not happy. They probably felt a few foreshocks....

But I am here to serve them... and chiefly on time.

By the way, birds LOVE eggo waffles for breakfast, and meat with veggies for lunch. They are funny

26. A certain geologist says to keep a running total of lost pets locally -- they
sense the changes in the earth... (like didn't the Chinese have crickets so when they went silent, they knew a quake was nigh?)

I tracked lost pets once, and I'll be damned if the number didn't triple before we had a sizable quake.

On the other hand, I've had cats sleep through quakes that I felt.

I'm laughing picturing your bird ducking and covering.
