Ayatollah-freeing-to-Russia fax likely doctored by opposition, Israelis say
Edited on Thu Dec-31-09 11:48 PM by mcablue
A couple of days ago, many here went gaga over a rumor started by an Iranian media outlet in the Netherlands, which made its way into Radio Netherlands, the Huffington Post, and the whole internet. The rumor was based on a document allegedly written by Iranian officials, arranging for the departure of the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei to Russia in the event that protests got out of control. Here's the fax:

I was one of the few skeptics, based on my having seen false reports of Khamenei having died in the past. At any rate, today, the Jerusalem Post (with the contribution of the Associated Press) reports today:

The authenticity of the letter has been challenged and Israeli observers of Iran said it was likely circulated as part of the opposition's "psychological warfare" efforts aimed at motivating protestors to keep rioting despite the regime's violent crackdown.

The Huffington Post itself quoted an Iranian expert saying the document was a forgery. See DU thread for link to HuffPo piece.

I wish Khamenei fled, but let's not let wishful thinking blur our judgment.

1. Mind you we now know that the MKO were responsible of the chaos in Tehran
The MKO claimed that they were the ones who coordinated and ordered the torch of business' in Tehran.

I have no meaning of understanding anyone who truly believe that both the MKO and the fringe supported by the CIA had nothing to do with Iran's unrest.

Happy New Year!
