The profound capacity of love and goodness. Get out the Kleenex..
Agnes Awori is a 53-year-old widow who lives in a Kenyan slum. She has 11 children to support -- four of her own, the rest her dead sister's.

Agnes Awori is hurrying to the market, early afternoon. She sees a cluster of perhaps two dozen people on the railway track. Probably the usual thing, she thinks: someone killed by a train.

snip

Turns out it isn't a body, just a plastic shopping bag. It's been lying there at least four hours, someone tells her.

"It was a human being," Awori says. "He was just dumped there, with his umbilical cord. He was naked, as he'd just been born."

snip

As she gently picks him up and cuddles him, the women in the crowd laugh at her. She carries him away, a stream of ridicule and laughter pealing in her ears.

"Some said, 'Don't you have work to do?' Others said, 'You can't leave your work for that. You can just sell that child for 10 shillings.'

"I didn't care," she says. "It hurts my heart to see a human being thrown away."

How is it that some people never lose the capacity to care?

2. Some small part of humanity will always give a reason for the rest to not lose hope and to carry on.
Hopefully, it'll one day be a huge majority that cares that much.

Thanks for posting this.

3. I read these stories backwards.
I read it and am amazed that a culture has gotten so sick that this woman's actions are seen (among members of that culture) as laughable, and that the fact she does what she does is newsworthy, and that there is nothing people do after reading this story to change things. It's sad.

4. GWB closed family planning clinics worldwide, as soon as he took office........

because they also provided abortions, condoms, etc. There must be millions of children born in Africa these past 9 years, that were not wanted and disposed of.

Another Bush legacy.

Obama has reopened all the family planning clinics worldwide.

5. Today, let's honor all the families, women and men who take
foster children into their home all over the world. Many wonderful Americans open their hearts and homes to abused children every day. If I were a bit younger I would do it. Caring for foster children is not easy, but it is one of the most important things a person can do.
