Harold Camping lets out a hearty chuckle when he considers the people who believe the world will end in 2012.

.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"That date has not one stitch of biblical authority," Camping says from the Oakland office where he runs Family Radio, an evangelical station that reaches listeners around the world. "It's like a fairy tale."

The real date for the end of times, he says, is in 2011.

The Mayans and the recent Hollywood movie "2012" have put the apocalypse in the popular mind this year, but Camping has been at this business for a long time. And while Armageddon is pop science or big-screen entertainment to many, Camping has followers from the Bay Area to China.

10. Given that the Rapture is supposed to save the "righteous" think how disappointed they'll be
Edited on Fri Jan-01-10 09:48 PM by dflprincess
if it's those who actually followed Christ's words about charity that are "raptured" while the "true believers" are all "left behind" - especially if all those rewarded with rapture are of other faiths or even <gasp> non-believers?

It would be worth staying just to see their reaction. :rofl:

6. From W B Yeats to the Rapturists
TURNING and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
'The Second Coming'

Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born

12. Sorry about your luck, but only the Amish are going to get raptured.
You get your pick of buggies, but I hope you like yours in black, 'cause that's all they have.

9. Man, it seems like its always the end of the world.
I've lived through plenty of these end of the world dates, and and I'm sure I'll be here on May 22, 2011.

14. I'm busy that day with my secular humanism.
I like to celebrate late spring by plowing under acres of ignorance, then choosing reason and science over superstition and legend.

Those predicting THE END always predict it in their own lifetime. That reveals the self centered nature of such predictions.
