Some things I didn't know about McDonalds
15 Horrifying Reasons to Never Let Anyone You Love Near a McDonald's

By Sarah Irani, EcoSalon. Posted August 15, 2009.

One of AlterNet's most popular articles of the year: Erectile dysfunction, the truth behind the "special sauce," and a burger from 1996. Keep reading if you dare.

http://www.alternet.org/story/141959/15_horrifying_reasons_to_never_let_anyone_you_love_near_a_mcdonald%27s

When my food budget was about 7 dollars a day McDonalds was my saviour. Now it scares the bejeezus out of me.

Do you still have a steak from 1996 that looks edible and as fresh as the day it was cut? Doubtful. See ..... these are things I found interesting in the article.

it dosent matter which, you will always get people who will start to want to get whatever food you are talking about regardless of what it is.. Its a strange phenom ive noticed on my travels across the intreneets....

14. As brilliant a reply as it was in response to.

I posted an article containing information some may find interesting. Show me the rules that state questionable food practices and ingredients are not to be discussed here. I know you're not really interested, but some of those ingredients are exactly what are major causes of the conditions that are killing us early. Not that it's important, mind you.

15. you are still missing the point of my post, its nothing to do with the food practices etc
its just pointing out that these posts make people want the very foods we are talking about, you seem to have an issue with understanding this. I hate to break this to you but everything is killing us, its part of being human we eventually die, now the occasional big mac along the way like the occasional pizza just makes the journey more enjoyable...

18. No, not missing the point at all.
You don't believe food should be an issue or discussed, because it invariably brings out the 'so what if it's half f*ing mystery food, I'll eat what I want and just mentioning it pisses me off and makes me hungrier!!!" Well, good for you. Pass it by. Like I said, some people including myself are interested in what they eat. I work with the ambulance, I've known for a long time people all eventually die ..... so really, you're no 'genius' breaking that newsflash to me. Eat your big mac, doesn't matter to me one bit, as much as you're trying to imply posting this article was some sort of attack on anyone. Have the mods delete the thread if it bothers you so much. Jesus.

It's sort of like knowing that there are always people who disagree on any subject. Fairly simple concept. The thing is ....... I wasn't advocating anything one way or the other. I posted an article I thought may be of interest and you jumped right in. Like I said, if it bothers you that much have it deleted.

64. A blog post will never do that for you
perhaps a trip to Greeley, CO might do it for you. If you catch the wind right, you might not even make it into town. But if ya do, go check out the killing floor at one of the slaughterhouses.

You can smell blood, rot, and death for miles. But you can also see it up close..

But perhaps that might just get ya in the mood. Some like it rare!

That's the best you could manage? My food budget now is about 7 bucks a day
and I eat well. Hearty soups with homemade stock. I bake my own bread. Broccoli, carrots, green peppers are all cheap. I can tomatoes and freeze stuff from the garden. Make my own preserves. Eggs are cheap.I can always find butter for under 3 bucks a pound. A pound of tofu goes a long way. Pasta and rice dishes. Oatmeal for breakfast. It's not hard as long as you're willing to actually cook and put some effort into it.

43. Yes, I freeze fresh produce all the time from my garden.
Now that I have a home and a freezer it's much easier than trying to find a pile of snow and something to put it in like I would have had to do when I didn't have a home or freezer. It does require a little stove heat for the blanching, but I didn't have to worry about that then either as I had no stove.

This is hilarious.

35. Agreed & Well Said
I have found that a slow cooker is a wonderful thing to have and makes all sorts of interesting dishes with a huge variety that can be found on the web, cook books or magazines at the grocery check out. Nothing like coming home to the aroma of a nice vegetable soup or chili on a cold day. You can make enough to enjoy for a few days by just adding some different things to each meal and probably eat very well for $7.00 a day.

38. I had no slow cooker either.
The poster was implying I could have done a lot better than relying on fast food. Should I have lit a big barrel on fire in the middle of the street to make a nice hot chili? LOL. You two really need to take your cooking lessons to the homeless and make them feel a little more inhuman than people with absolutely nothing, let alone a f*ing pot, just normally do.

44. My, my a bit hyper sensitive?
I lived a very frugal life for many years and now do not live one that is exorbitant by any means. The point is about making choices (and there are a variety of ones that can be made in many situations), if McDonalds worked for you, fine (I really don't care one way or the other). However, your OP is about making choices is it not? By the number of responses you have made along the thread, it appears that you have chosen to be rather argumentative and critical of others ideas and thoughts, I choose not to participate in such a continued discussion of the topic, So I now take my leave.

Edited on Sat Jan-02-10 08:14 AM by polly7
The ARTICLE pointed out things I SAID 'I' didn't know about McDonald's. Not one word by me about making any choice. I've been ridiculed for not being able to cook wisely, with no home lol, told to 'FUrself' for being anti-meat when I eat meat all the time and never said a word against eating meat, and for posting the same thing I just did a search on that has been posted about fast food over and over on this forum.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/searchresults.html?q=fast+food&sitesearch=democraticunderground.com&sa=Search&domains=democraticunderground.com&client=pub-7805397860504090&forid=1&ie=ISO-8859-1&oe=ISO-8859-1&cof=GALT%3A%23008000%3BGL%3A1%3BDIV%3A%23336699%3BVLC%3A663399%3BAH%3Acenter%3BBGC%3AFFFFFF%3BLBGC%3A336699%3BALC%3A0000FF%3BLC%3A0000FF%3BT%3A000000%3BGFNT%3A0000FF%3BGIMP%3A0000FF%3BFORID%3A11&hl=en

Make things up all you like, I also do not care what you choose to post on. Why would I? I respond when people respond to me. If I had no cooking utensils, appliances, money ........ why should I be preached to on the value of canning, preserving, freezing food I couldn't afford to keep? Sorry, I'm no doormat, not even on a message board. If that's what you appreciate, well sorry you were so disappointed.

I'm sure a little more demeaning made you feel better, but I think personal attacks aren't a great way to make any sort of point ....... assuming you had one.

Eat at a McDonalds if you like (I don't because I really don't like their food) or don't if you choose not to, but those are real jobs held by real people trying to get through their day just as is everyone else.

16. Anti-meat post (I reads above like someone is expecting one)
I was experiencing arthritis in two fingers following an injury. My doctor suggested a no-beef and no-pork diet. One month later, arthritis gone.

Two years later, neither my wife or I eat beef, pork or poultry. Fortunately, we live in Alaska where seafood is readily available and less expensive than good beef or pork.

Health benefit: was also able to drop the cholesterol, blood pressure and acid reflux prescription medications. Second health benefit, being able to drop the statin drugs reduced side effects (muscle and joint problems).

Negative result: People who eat meat smell bad when they sweat. We never noticed it before, so never had to deal with it.

It all works well for us, and we never push it on anyone.

We have nothing against meat eaters--both of our German Shepherds still swear by the stuff.

Still enjoy the McDonald's Filet-o-Fish when I'm craving grease and salt.

50. Another genetic thing...
Fish odor disease. Trimethylaminuria.

Luckily, mine only shows up as dead fish smelling urine. Others can have the dead fish smell emanating from their entire bodies, and has nothing to do with hygiene, or lack of it.

For me, it only happens when I eat seafood/fish, which I prefer over meat.

But anyway, there's that, and the awful smell from asparagus pee. Things can get rather stinky around my house at times. More so in the winter when I'm eating the raw garlic for its anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties.

61. I posted the article to my Facebook page
And I'm getting comments saying they'll never eat at McDonald's again.

I eat a couple of filet-o-fish a year from McDonalds, but they always sound better than they taste.

I think the same thing is true for prepared foods in general. We picked up a container of artichoke-jalapeno dip, and the list of ingredients and additives was a mile long. My homemade recipe has artichokes, jalapenos, non-fat sour cream, Parmesan cheese, an salt. I'll be that patter holds true for most prepared foods.

Thanks for that post. I just took it as information to process, not a challenge to my personal world view.

57. Actually, it was an "information" post. And some chose to see it as "propaganda."
Some people may want information about their food suppressed. I don't, as it happens.

But then I would never eat at McDonald's. (And yes I am a red-meat-eater.)

62. Some people see challenges where there are none.
I just took it as what you said--information--take it or leave it.

It's funny, when people find our that my wife and I don't eat meat, pork or poultry, their reactions frequently are not only defensive, they go beyond defense to offense. Once they've finished preaching to us about the benefits of eating meat and the dangers of a vegetarian diet, they'll say something like, "We just get tired of being preached to by vegetarians."

40. first red flag: that burger from 1996 = fake. i saw that woman's site
more than a year ago.

http://bestwellnessconsultant.com/2008/09/23/1996-mcdonalds-hamburger-karen-hanrahan-best-of-mother-earth.aspx

she's a shaklee distributor, & her titles: wellness educator, nutrition consultant are from shaklee, not from any legit ed.

mcdonalds' burgers will rot in the presence of moisture.

any bread kept in dry conditions will just turn into dry bread.

cooked burger kept in dry conditions will also just dry & turn into hockey-puck-like thing.

whether it's mcdonald's or the bread/burger you have at home.

besides which, if she took the trouble to keep the burger since 1996, why not its wrapping?

i'm no advocate for mcdonalds', but this woman is a phoney.

46. The use of hamburger injected with ammonia to kill E. coli
by nearly all of the fast food restaurants has just about done it for me....I have to admit still having the urge for Taco Bell or craving a hamburger now and then, but that has dramatically dimenished the more I know about their accepted practices (and knowing first hand how little control we have over their "nonaccepted practices" occurring)

The article that the post links to is just hyperbole. The very first example it shows has been around so long and proven to be fake that any sort of fact checking should have caught it. The other examples, as far as I got, are no better.

If you don't like McDonalds that is fine. If you want to give good reasons why McDonalds should be avoided that is fine too. But the article (linked) is an attack without a sound base. If you used it to support your argument you'd get shot out of the water in a heartbeat. So I unrecommended it.

48. So you unrecommended it, is that supposed to mean something?
I think I do believe the examples in the article. So we'll have to agree to disagree. I won't take your word over the researchers at Alternet, because I've read many of their articles and found them to be true upon further research. If you say it's full of lies, perhaps you could prove those lies with links that might bolster your argument. But thanks for the unrec, I didn't even think it had a rec???

59. As the Author I would think you'd be interested to know it has been debunked
And no, I'm not going to do your research for you. I am simply telling you that the stuff in the article has been debunked - you wrote the article and it is up to you to prove it accurate - but I can give you a big hint, you won't even have to go back 6 months on DU to find that same nonsense article about the burger that has never rotted.

So get your facts straight before you right or link to an article that relies on already exposed bogus examples- don't ask me to do it for you after you've made an ass of yourself in public by spreading this nonsense further. If you've got a hair up your ass against McDonalds there is plenty of good information to support your arguments against the company, but you advance nothing by spreading unchecked nonsense.

LOL.

You're the one saying it's 'full of' lies.

Prove it. I already know the preservatives and poison we eat, I found other comments in the article interesting. Sorry that got your panties in a twist. Crude too ........... nice. I guess that makes you more believable.

54. Super Size Me cured me from ever eating at McDonald's again
Their food disgusts me. I can eat their breakfast now and then but you couldn't pay me to eat one of their hamburgers.

56. As seems to be the case lately, the purer than thou crowd will attack YOU and not the author
which is their subtle way of trying to intimidate you into not posting anti-corporate articles here.......It's ALWAYS the poster's responsibility to fact check every word from every article so that there is no room for criticism by the butt scratchers here.......

:sarcasm:

PS

I stopped eating at Mickey D's last year, and while I used to get plain hamburgers from Burglar King, that will stop too. Starting more and more to pack lunch now.

58. The last time I had anything besides coffee from
McDonalds was on a road trip just over a year ago. Somehow a burger, fries, and a coke were around $6 and it wasn't that good.

or from drinking beer. it is made by Specialized and called a road bike. Amazing how riding 30 minutes a day keeps your ass from getting fat.

67. Reason # 4 must be a standard company practice. Lol.
Earlier this year my husband & another shopper stood & watched in horror as a McDs employee at the Westfield mall in Escondido used a "for soiled towels only" bucket to refill the ice machine. Needless to say, hubby left without his ice tea.

Wtf?
