13. I'm sure the one who gave the UnRec is happy you used the 1st response to point out their action. |
|
Attention is what they want, attention is what you give them.
Whatever happened to: "Don't feed the trolls"?

28. I always unrec threads that begin with a complaint about an unrec |
|
Such a thread cannot be the greatest DU has to offer, if that's more important than the content.

33. I've seen OPs where the 1st response in minutes is a complaint about an UnRec |
|
and then the thread goes on to get over 100 Recs and ends up on the Front Page.
Yes, if a thread is so important, then why is it so necessary to point out an UnRec with the very first response. God forbid that someone might disagree with an OP even if they are not a troll or freeper (there are those who are so self important that they would accuse anyone of giving their thread an UnRec of being either a troll or freeper or both).

by what standard are we to determine if we are overweight, just right or underweight? Is it our own self image? Or is it according to charts by insurance companies? The guidelines laid out by the US Preventative Services Task Force? http://heartdisease.about.com/cs/riskfactors/a/obesityrecs.htm

5. each person's general impression of their own body |
|
Unless a person is anorexic, I think most of us know if we need to gain or lose weight.

8. lets be honest about this, you can pretty much tell if you need to lose weight |
|
anyone who says different is kidding themselves on, when you cant perform everyday tasks then you need to lose weight, when you are so weak you cant even get off the toilet seat then you need to gain weight, everyone apart from the feeble minded can see their own body and know whether they eat to much or not for the amount of excercise they do..

I'd be really happy with another 35 lbs of muscle mass on me. So long as my body fat level stays below 14%, I'm good.

11. I dunno, to be honest. |
|
I'm 45 years old, 6'-2" and weigh around 175 lbs.; that's within standard healthy parameters, I think.
But what I really should do is take off some fat and put on some muscle while keeping around that weight. So even though I might be considered at an ideal weight, I probably have some health concerns; too-broad parameters can be misleading, I believe.

12. I stay around 200 - 205, and I feel good and look decent at age 67. |
|
My primary care manager told me one time not to try to go below 190, because the way I am built due to a lifetime of lifting weights I would look anorexic.
Three years ago I reduced to 180, and he was right.
Blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar - all good. Stress test in November showed no heart problems.
BMI charts show me as overweight at 5' 8", but I don't worry about those charts. I'll go with tests listed above, general feeling, and overall appearance.

18. Phrasing it that way is going to skew things. There really needs to be an option for severity. |
|
I mean, lumping in somebody who is a few pounds over their ideal weight with somebody who is seriously obese isn't really fair to either- the health risks and social or practical concerns are not at all comparable. Likewise, somebody who is a bit skinny is in a totally different situation from somebody who is anorexic or seriously ill and well below their healthy weight.

23. Too low. 5 more pounds and I would be happy. |
|
I'm at my winter weight of around 120, I don't own a scale. My DH would like me best with another 15 pounds, likes to have something to hang onto. That was my non-smoking weight, 135.

24. Depends on how you feel when walking around. |
|
If you look heavy and don't have any problems walking around or other normal activities, if you feel healthy and your knees, hips, and back don't hurt - your weight is correct, no matter what the scale or the measuring tape indicate. If you look heavy - or even if you don't look particularly heavy (fat can hide closer to the bone in certain body shapes) - and have to stop and rest every two/three minutes when walking or even just standing around, your weight may be an issue.
Until I actually got "fat" (had problems with joints and felt heavy doing tasks), I was a healthy 5'6 and a half at 170 - 180 lbs. 20 to 30 lbs "hidded" in a healthy, curvey body. And didn't look fat except for hereditary arm flab.
Now at 210 lbs after a work injury that screwed up my back and right leg pretty perminantly and a desk job for the past 5 years, yeah, I'm fat. But only by at most, 40 lbs, in reality.

I've been laying on my ass for 2 weeks - vacation. So, I've picked up a little jiggle above my belt buckle, but that will come off soon enough.

i loathe the conflation of lbm and bodyfat.
it's nonsensical, but perpetuated by the bmi, etc.
just sayin
