PETA Calls For Ban On Horse-Drawn Carriages

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) ― PETA is calling for a ban on horse-drawn carriages in the Capital City after a drunk driver hit a carriage injuring two passengers and the horse last week.

The Sunday night hit-and-run crash was described as a "violent impact" by the driver and owner of the horse carriage. PETA has sent a letter to Mayor Kevin Johnson asking him to prohibit horse-drawn carriages in the city.

The crash split the carriage ejecting the driver and passengers. The horse, named Fox, was found five blocks away with injuries to its hind legs. The nine-year-old spotted draft horse suffered a gouge on his leg, but is expected to fully recover.

"Horse-drawn carriages and city traffic are a dangerous combination," says PETA Director Debbie Leahy. "We hope the mayor will act to eliminate horse-drawn carriages from Sacramento's streets, not only to protect public safety but also to spare horses the misery of long days spent breathing noxious fumes and trudging on unforgiving pavement."

PETA says similar accidents have happened in many other cities with horse-drawn carriage. PETA says several cities have banned horse-drawn carriages including Biloxi, Miss.; Las Vegas and Reno, Nev.; Palm Beach, Panama City, Key West, Deerfield Beach, and Pompano Beach, Fla.; Santa Fe, N.M.; Camden, N.J.; and London, Paris, Beijing, and Toronto.

Incidentally, is PETA going to ban Amish travel on thoroughfares, too?

6. Odd, PETA has no comment on the DRUNK DRIVER .
That caused all the problems in the first place..

12. Of course not...
Having flunked much of the rational public discourse on most matters, they've resorted to PR stunts and being media gadflies.

7. This is just silly. I grew up near Old Sac. Those horses have been there forever.
By this way of thinking, we should also ban all cars because someone hit a horse with the car. And since they were drinking, let's ban all booze, too.

I appreciate a lot of what PETA does, but sometimes, they get, in my opinion, silly. Remember Obama and the Fly?

14. Says the crash was at 3rd and O
many blocks south of Old Sac. (As an advocate in CA, Sac is my second home; in fact, I leave for there in about 20 minutes.) Is the stable down near there?

9. At least this isnt as bad as some of their recent ideas.
Breast milk in ice-cream and renaming fish "sea-kittens" tops this by far.

22. Because a person got drunk and drove (Memo to PETA: illegally),
horse drawn carriages should be banned? Thank goodness he didn't hit a school bus full of children. PETA would want those banned too.

27. Very true. In fact, best ban driving while not drunk. That way only drunk drivers can hit other
drunk drivers.

My ex foster daughter moved up into a casino town and the coach would come by her house once an hour and she would run out on the porch and scream .STOP THE ANIMAL SLAVERY! The company changed their route so they would go by her house anymore..

We have those carriages here and for many years I have said as soon as we end the war and solve our other problems, I want to see what we can do to get those carriages off our streets.

33. Why would anyone ever want to ban horse-drawn carriages?
Only abject morons or moon-addled crazies would ever possibly want to ban this lovely, charming, and absolutely safe practice of merging horses with traffic in major metropolitan areas!

Lunacy, I say!
