Nazi resistance fighter Moltke dead at 98: report

NEW YORK — Freya von Moltke, a prominent member of the German resistance during World War II alongside her husband, has died at the age of 98 in the United States, The Valley News reported.

A one-sentence announcement in the newspaper said she died late on Friday but did not give details. German-born Moltke was a resident of the Vermont town of Norwich.

Her husband, Helmuth James Graf von Moltke, was a German jurist and a founding member of a resistance group against Adolf Hitler.

In January 1944 he was arrested by the Gestapo, tried for treason, sentenced to death and executed in Berlin in late January 1945.

that provided the Prussian Army with Chief of Staff Field Marshal Helmuth Graf von Moltke (the elder) during the wars with the Austrians and the French during the 1870, and the German Army Chief of Staff Field Marshal Helmuth von Moltke (the younger)at the outbreak of WWI.

Helmuth James Graf von Moltke (11 March 1907 – 23 January 1945) was a German jurist, a member of the opposition against Adolf Hitler in Nazi Germany, and a founding member of the Kreisau Circle resistance group. He was the great-grandnephew of Helmuth von Moltke the Elder, the victorious commander in the Austro-Prussian and Franco-Prussian Wars, and the owner of the Kreisau Estate in Prussian Silesia.
