Dem front-runner for MI governor expected to drop out
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 11:06 AM by blue_onyx
"Democratic Lt. Gov. John Cherry will make a major announcement about his political future around noon today. Party sources say he has decided against running for Michigan governor.

Longtime party fundraiser Faylene Owen confirmed today Cherry, who had not formally entered the race, won't try to succeed Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, saying the tough economy and Granholm's record have made it difficult for Cherry to raise money. "

more: http://detnews.com/article/20100105/POLITICS02/1050391/Lt.-Gov.-Cherry-won-t-run-for-governor

Why? I think he was a stronger choice than most people thought. I guess this pretty much gives the governorship to the GOP.

50. Thanks for the correction. I had it wrong.
Anyway, I think both Shrek and Mrs ShrekDaddy are both good people, I'd vote for either one for Gov.

Sheila's the one that has time to campaign. Ken Jr is busy on what is hopefully an improved City Council.

6. I disagree
Granholm has done a good job given the circumstances. I believe most people do realize that she's not responsible for the economy doing so horrible. But people need someone to blame, even if that person didn't cause the pain. I believe if Granholm could run, she would be re-elected.

I don't think Cherry is a horrible candidate. He's not the best canddiate to ever run but certainly not the awful candidate people make him out to be.

Who else do the Dems have? I won't vote DINO Dillion (may as well vote Republican). Bernero is completely unknown, as is Alma Wheeler Smith.

8. It's not whether you or I agree on Granholm's performance (we don't)
--it's that her name is synonymous with failure in the State of Michigan. Her failures could be more easily excused in the context of Republican control of national politics, but she has not shown any special influence on the Obama administration, either. Compare the strings-free largesse heaped on New York to the Obama administration's relative indifference to Michigan's worst-in-the-nation economy, for example.

"I believe if Granholm could run, she would be re-elected."

I disagree.

10. Yes, MI has been ignored for years
Nobody cares about MI until election time. I didn't expect that to chance with Obama coming into office (although Granholm did).

I stand by Granholm and the works she has done. She has given MI as strong foundation to build on, particularly with all the green energy and film investments she brought here. Part of the reason I was a Cherry support is because I thought he was the best option for continuing the focus on these areas. I also don't want some Republican coming to office and taking credit for the investments Granholm brought here just because they opened during their term.

Who do you think should be the nominee? I can't think of anyone who would be better than Cherry.

11. Kym Worthy? Debbie Dingell?
I have no clue who should be the candidate. Michigan politics is such a top down affair that there isn't really any "farm team" developing any talent that I know of...

And while I only half joke about Ms. Worthy (she'd easily take Wayne County), I doubt she'd secure many votes on the west coast.

Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 12:05 PM by blue_onyx
I thought Kym Worthy would be great for Attorney General.

Gretchen Whitmer who is running for Attorney General could be a good candidate for governor, although she would probably be portrayed as Granholm part 2.

I thought Dennis Archer would be a good option until recently when it became clear that he should probably run for governor of Ohio instead.

We agree again!

(But I DO think that Cherry is a bad candidate as well.)

I have thought and thought about this...and the only
PERSON that I would like to see run is Mark Brewer.

I know, no one knows him outside of the party, and
he may even be PREVENTED from running because of his
position in the party, but of all the people I have
personally met, I trust him to deliver the news, both
good and bad, honestly and candidly.

Pipe dream, I know....

I think Kym Worthy kicks ass, and would support her
if she decided to run.

4. I don't know about "gives the race to the GOP"
but I suspect Cherry dropped out because he didn't think he could win. The only polls I've seen were by right-leaning polling groups, but Cherry trailed substantially in all cases.

It could actually improve our chanced in MI, because the "generic" R vs D polling is much closer. The trick is finding a "D" that voters don't associate with Granholm.

7. I don't think there are any Dem candidates who are better
The reason Cherry was seen as a horrible candidate is because everyone kept calling him a horrible candidate. It was a self-fulfilling prophecy.

All of the current Democratic candidates are worse. Andy Dillon is a DINO and the base won't support him (I won't vote for him in the general election). Virg Bernero and Alma Wheeler Smith are unknown outside their city/district. Unless some Democratic candidate emerges out of nowhere, the GOP will win.

9. "Better" depends on who is doing the judging.
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 11:42 AM by FBaggins
Fairly or unfairly, he can't separate himself from Gran holm. A lesser candidate without that baggage could end up being more successful.

Bernero and Wheeler Smith may fit precisely because they ARE unknown. People who prefer a democrat but not one associated with the bad smell... may find them to be acceptable.

But I agree that MI is at least "leans R" right now. That's important because MI will likely lose a House seat in the coming redistricting and it would help if we could hold the Gov seat and pick up the state Senate. Losing both likely means an incumbent R vs an incumbent D in an R-leaning district.

51. Not surprised.....I believe this state (sad but true) will go in the R column
Granholm got a raw deal but in the same aspect, she never made contact with the African-American vote in the state after she won the last election. Also, with losing on the Michigan Promise issue with the Republican Senate, it all but handed the GOP a victory in the 2010 upcoming state elections. Many, many, many people are downright PISSED about the Promise Scholarship being taken away. Thank God my daughter had the TIP Scholarship instead (which was funded from the big tobacco settlement about 6 years ago) and that money cannot be taken away or cut out of the budget....or I would be PISSED too.

In the same aspect, my son, who was not eligible for a TIP Scholarship and could have looked forward to a Promise Scholarship after completing his 60 college credits, but, this opportunity is all but done now. The $2400 over the last two years, would have help reduced his loan intake.

Now, the public schools are being cut to frankly non-existent images with the MAJOR cuts in K-12 State Funding. Teachers are being laid off left and right in the middle of the semester because the state senate and governor cannot manage to approve a budget for the next year, in July, like MOST OTHER STATES. Schools have to hope and pray they have a budget in line with the state funding, only to find out in October/November or as late as December that their state funding is being cut AGAIN.

I am a Left Lending Independent and at this point I would like the Governorship to fall in the hands of a Independent Candidate. No Republican or Democrat, IMHO. Both parties have taken this state to the brinks of hell with their continuing bad decisions in handling our state budget.

why would they blame Gov. Granholm? It was the Republicans who ended it. Granholm has been the person who most vocally supported the promise scholarships. The budget mess was clearly the result of GOP obstructionism and polls show that the public agree.

The Governor who should have foreseen the upcoming issues with the state budget and made changes before it got to the mess it is. Also, the Republican Senate for PLAYING GAMES with the K-12 State Funding and Promise Scholarship programming, KNOWING FULL WELL that kids in the state of Michigan need a decent K-12 and College (at least a Community College) education to make it within the state of Michigan right now.

This is downright shameful and a failure of Michigan state Government-Both Republican and Democrats. Bring on a good Independent Candidate PLEASE!!!

The recession? GM and Chrysler going bankruptcy? If she had those types of abilities, she would be a billionaire.

Some of tax reforms that are being mentioned to fix the budget this year were mentioned by her years ago (taxing services, graduated income tax). If you know a way to get Mike Bishop do his job, feel free to share it.

There are no independent candidates who have a chance to win.
