GOP chief: Republicans 'screwed up' after Reagan

By DOUGLASS K. DANIEL, Associated Press Writer Douglass K. Daniel, Associated Press Writer – Tue Jan 5, 7:37 am ET

WASHINGTON – Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele offers a simple explanation for why the GOP all too often lost touch with typical Americans since the Ronald Reagan era: "We screwed up," he claims in a new book offering a blueprint for the party's resurgence.

That "we" includes the last two Republican presidents and the most recent Republican candidate for president.

In "Right Now: A 12-Step Program for Defeating the Obama Agenda," released Monday by Regnery Publishing, Steele says the GOP should acknowledge where "we most glaringly compromised our principles" in the past decade and hold its elected officials accountable.

"We must support Republican officials who assert these principles," he writes. "When elected Republicans vote against Republican principles, the voters must withhold their support — withhold it vigorously and consistently."

17. The Republicans do SO have principles!
"Me first and fuck you" is a principle. Not a very good one, and certainly nothing to build anything on but a game of Monopoly, but a principle nevertheless.

8. If they screwed up over the last 22 years, I'd hate to see what they consider a success.
The republicans have remolded the entire country to fit their ideology over the last 20 years

10. Republicans screwed up after Nixon, not Reagan
The best Republican president of the last fifty years was Richard Nixon. Okay, he was corrupt; name one who wasn't. He was arguably less corrupt than Reagan or Poppy Bush and he was DEFINITELY less corrupt than Dubya. Look at Nixon's numbers: economically he was the best Republican president since maybe Eisenhower--his action to freeze wages and prices sucked but it kept us from Bushian hyperinflation. The number of officials in Reagan's administration who were indicted dwarfs the number in Nixon's. (At this point you're going to tell me they threw Agnew in jail but not Bush, and they forced Nixon to resign but not Reagan. This is true, but Bush and Reagan both needed to be in jail. For pure criminality nothing beats the Reagan administration.)

The Republicans claim to be the party of small government, but the last Republican president who actually was for small government is Tricky Dick. And as we know, in Nixon's autumn years he became somewhat of an elder statesman. It was he who forced GHWB to recognize the dramatic changes in the Soviet Union; Bush was going to ignore them and hope they went away. I really think if it weren't for Nixon's reproach to Bush we would have gotten the Soviet Union back.

The Republicans' problem is real simple: they CAN'T go back to the days of Nixon. If a Republican, or a Democrat for that matter, were to stand up and say "I'm going to be more like Richard Nixon," no one would remember Nixon the Adult Politician. They would remember Nixon the Corrupt Bastard. Similarly, if you say you're going to be like Reagan they make sure to make you think of the Reagan who passed out tax cuts like Fun Size Snickers Bars at Halloween rather than the Reagan who armed the Iranians, the Iraqis, the Contras and Osama bin Laden and whose vice-president's grandfather bankrolled Hitler.

11. Why is it only after they have done their damage that they admit they're fucked up?
For 8 years they cheered that asshole Bush on even in the face of obvious disaster. And why is it always the man that was wrong and not the plan that was wrong?
