The study also goes on to proclaim water is wet.

2. So do men.
This used to be 'common knowledge', and was thot to be the contentment of being married. Regular home-cooked meals, regular sex, something settled in their life, and so on. :)

3. I wonder where the studies on men are
Gosh, those of us who "let ourselves go" :eyes: due to the medical issues that come from aging are wondering why we're saddled with guys who lose their hair, beer bellies, etcetera.

Where's that study? I'm waiting. I'll be waiting for a long time, I suppose.

7. Men get more "distinguished" as they age, no matter if they
look like utter hell.

Men generally look worse than women as they get older.

22. My 30th high school reunion was in September
The women looked great. With very few exceptions, they're obviously using the anti-aging products/Botox/etcetera. I don't do the Botox thing, but I'm all over the complexion stuff, color my hair, use flattering makeup, and dress right out of the "How Not to Look Old" book that came out a couple of years ago. ;-)

The guys looked like hell. Let's face it, I'm no fashion model by ANY stretch of the imagination, but wow. It was really shocking to see how much the guys disintegrate as they hit their late 40's. Of course, there were a couple of them that had much younger women on their arm.

26. Ain't that the truth - but they (and society) expect women to look perfect
at all ages and waste time and money on assinine studies showing that *gasp!* - they don't. And even when aging or coupled men look WORSE than aging or coupled women - that doesn't seem to be considered 'an issue'.

:wtf:

I'd like to see men endure childbearing + aging and come out looking as good as most women do - at any age. Pfft! (oh. but that's "different"...)

13. LOL, very long pause
One of my pet peeves is to hear some beer bellied guy criticize a woman for gaining weight. I guess the scales only work when estrogen is present.

31. I know you're being funny, but...
...a simple google search shows plenty of studies showing men gain weight too when they're married. There have even been sudies that show they gain weight when their wives are pregnant, or they gain more weight when their relationships with their wives are bad, etc.

One study from 2007 showed that both men and women gained weight, though men on average gained 24 pounds, versus 18 for women.

5. Doesn't apply to my wife
We've been married 35 years and she's smaller, healthier and in better shape today then the day we got married. She's a gym rat and a health food freak. I, on the other hand.

10. You're my heroes!
What's your secret. Do you all cook seperate meals? Or does she just eat less of everything. I know you love to cook, BOSSHOG.

I'm overweight but I am trying to eat healthier. And I have a long standing gym membership and love going. I know what I'm supposed to be eating.

My SO, OTOH. :eyes:

His "diet" is poisonous! He eats out a lot. He's obese and infact looks like he's about to give birth to a 35 lb basketball. He's a wonderful warm guy, but wow. the eating!

I'm trying to figure out how to maintain my regime and not have to part ways over food.

14. We both think healthy eating
but the quantities the thing. We eat lots of Veggies and use Ground Turkey instead of hamburger. I make stuff like Turkey and White Bean Chili which is very tasty and fairly healthy. I walk at least 20 minutes a day and am losing weight slowly but surely. I also drink water all day, I goal for 100 ounces a day. I for the most part avoid fast food and candy. We always eat breakfast. I heard in a nutrition class along time ago - "fat people don't eat breakfast." It does what it says it does breaks your fast and gets ya fired up for the day. However, I continue to keep Budweiser in business.

Get you SO to take a walk after supper. Every supper.

Good luck to you.

18. I alternate
between a box of Cheerios and a Box of Total. My wife eats the Kashi stuff. My Wife takes me to a Catfish restaurant on my birthday and that's about the extent of our dining out.

I'm not sure whether this is intended as health advice or marriage advice, but it'll do well in both categories.

30. We do this when we can
I hope to do more when we get longer warmer days. I've already told him I'm taking hikes on the weekend starting in spring and he'd better be ready.

But in the meantime, it sure it hard to keep him from the pretzel booth and the Toll House cookie store at the mall. :P

Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 02:16 PM by seabeyond
•Newly married women in that age group packed on 24 pounds in five years; newly married men gained 30 pounds.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2007-10-22-marriage-weight_N.htm

this is a duh thread. i lost ten when i married and have stayed at that weight for 16 yrs eating moderately, whatever i want. marriage best thing for my weight. but just irritating singling out women.....

so an easy google lets us know the obvious. men and women tend to gain when they marry and when they age

16. They all showed up (men and women) at my gym this week to sign up for torture sessions. :-D

Jan One is still the day of "This year I swear I'm going to lose weight, stop smoking, no more drinking/drugging, be nicer to ------, finish my degree, etc." It lasts about two months and then back to the same old, same old. I don't know how many sun shiney "you can do it if you stick with it" lectures I've given in the past few days. Lots.

At some point rather large man came in and said he's eaten nothing but steak/kraft mac & cheese/karnotzle (sp?) for years. Neither he nor his wife cook, and it shows. :)

17. You live with someone, you cook more.
You cook more, you eat more.

Simple.

And if you have children, forget it. The kitchen is constantly going. You're doomed.

27. True. Alone, I could live off rice or pasta.

I have a family. I cook for them.

I entertain for my friends.

I suppose I should just have the will power to not eat any of it or just spend my life at the gym.

Fuck these studies.

21. In my case, I gained weight when we started dating and eating out a lot.
Since we stopped eating out so much (and eating much better) I have lost 20 pounds and so has he. BUT we just moved in together so who knows what will happen. We haven't changed our healthier eating habits yet though. I didn't even gain weight over the holidays.

29. It's called comfort and age.
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 03:52 PM by juno jones
It used to be a goal.

The need to remain forever young distorts our society in weird ways. I am forever fascinated by this site: http://www.awfulplasticsurgery.com because of the lengths people will go to conform to an ersatz ideal of beauty.

Actually I am a total ringer. I wear the same size now as I did in HS. I am a 16 now and have been up and down the scale depending on my life at the time. Tell you the truth, when I was a societally acceptable size 9, I was far unhealthier due to diet, lifestyle, etc than the times I gained weight due to physical inactivity post injury/accident.

I'm not advocating 'letting oneself go', but older people need to explain to noone why their chronic knee injury makes it hard to jog, or one's cracked vertebrae makes it impossible to do everything one used to.

33. It happens.
Edited on Tue Jan-05-10 04:11 PM by juno jones
I am 46 and have worked physcially for a living since 1983. I have had many on the job injuries to back and knees, not to mention chronic repetive motion injuries. This is par for me and most working dogs of my aquaintance. (PS was also in a bad accident, not my fault, a few years ago, I have learned not to assume)

I am fit for my age, if not spectacular. I get out and walk for miles. I always did. That's why I am a 16 now and not a 20. My job also keeps me in shape. I dare anyone here to do what I do for 5, 6, 8 hours at a time. My resting pulse, even at 200 pounds astounds my medical personel.

As you age you just don't pop back and be what you were when you were 20. It catches up sooner or later. May you live long enough to recieve this wisdom, and be lucky enough to never have the worst happen. But for the grace o' gods an' all that.

Cheers, :hi: Juno-who hasn't been out walking for two weeks because of a swollen up knee that she must keep working on rather than healing.
