:headbang: Pragmatic soccer moms rule !!!

from the San Francisco Chronicle:

Bid to legalize pot is counter to U.S. trend
Joe Garofoli, Chronicle Staff Writer

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

With Californians likely to vote in November on whether to legalize marijuana, some key swing voters - Democratic and independent women - are expressing a surprising reason why they would support the initiative.

The suburban "soccer moms" who are likely voters have told pollsters that the measure, which would give local governments the authority to tax and regulate the sale of cannabis to adults 21 or older, would provide a safer way for their adult children to buy pot.

"One of the scary things to some people is that their kids may be buying it from someone dangerous," said Ruth Bernstein, a pollster with EMC Research, an Oakland firm that has been doing polling and focus groups on behalf of the measure's proponents.

California already boasts some of the nation's most pot-friendly laws. Possession of an ounce or less of marijuana is a misdemeanor, and those who obtain approval from a physician can grow or possess cannabis under the state's voter-approved 1996 medical marijuana law.

In 2001, state voters approved a law allowing first- or second-time possession-only offenders caught with larger amounts of pot to avoid jail by requesting a treatment program instead. ........(more)

1. If their kids are smoking weed, I'm not convinced their kids are on the soccer team.
I seriously doubt we'll be ever seeing the soccer team passing the bong around in the school bus after the game. Oh, well. Minor point.

Oh, now I see: "the measure...would provide a safer way for their adult children to buy pot", not their 6th graders, apparently.

4. The lives of children have much in common with the visible portions of icebergs
So much more is hidden than is seen.

Easily half of the girls in my high school soccer league were smoking marijuana at least casually, not to mention the drinking and the other drugs. Of course, that was a while ago. Perhaps attitudes toward marijuana use have become more conservative since then?

6. Well, I was mostly thinking about how marijuana affects me,
but then, it hits me harder than most other people, it seems. I'm pretty much unable to function for a whole day after smoking pot, but it's true, other people can incorporate it into their day like I drink coffee.

10. Like any other herb, it doesn't affect everyone in the same way
I have only used marijuana maybe three or four times in my life, and I just don't like it at all. Oddly, I was able to function and even finish homework etc while "under the influence" but it felt like my mind is being chopped into bits the whole time. Ugh.

However, several of my co-workers smoke pot several times a day without any apparent problems. And I can tell you, back in high school it was more than a little disconcerting to discover that some of the "honor students" earning a 4.0+ GPA in AP classes were regular pot smokers.

Gawd, I was on the frikkin' debate team, ffs, and we were a scandal and a half. Or would have been if we weren't too smart to get caught. ;)

13. The fact that a woman with adult children is still referred to as a "soccer mom" is bizarre to me.
