God is not your traffic cop (NSFW language)
'First Draft' blog-

Was it proselytizing? How about this: Was it STUPID? How exactly is Jesus Christ supposed to keep Tiger from sticking his dick in women he's not married to? How exactly does that work? Tiger is at the bar, getting eyes made at him by some adult woman, because who can blame her he's Tiger Frigging Woods and though I don't find him attractive I can see where girls want to hit that, and he's thinking, "Hmm, maybe I ought to have sex with her despite my being married to another lady," and Buddy Christ comes down and is all:

Because I don't think it works that way. In the First Church of Athenae, God is not your traffic cop. God is not your mommy. God is not your Fuckup Insurance. Far too many fucking people seem to be all up in God's stuff all day long asking Him to keep them from being assholes, and I just really ... You being inspired by Jesus to be a good person doesn't mean it is Jesus's job to make you a good person, and this is a critical distinction a lot of evangelical practitioners of Consumer Christianity seem to miss.

It is no one's job to make you a good person but you. It is your job to be that way. You can draw inspiration to not be a dick from anywhere you like, so far as I'm concerned, and I'm not opposed to whatever makes you happy being called God, but this constant acting like all it takes is a shot of the Jesus Vaccine to make your bullshit go away helps no one. It's ineffective. It's cheap.

So I don't really care if it was proselytizing or not. It was goddamn dumb.

Pun intended.

A.

1. I thought it was like the C Street Jesus
you can use his name to say you are forgiven. And continue to have sex with women who aren't your wife.

2. Hmm
Agreed.

I have met some truly uncaring and foul ex-junkies for Jesus. What a sweet deal that must be, you actually get to feel morally superior to people who didn't lie, steal, cheat, and break the law to get their narcotic fix. I had one that seemed to think I was lower than dirt because if he could find Jesus despite being a terrible wretch of a coke fiend than I must be truly be even more horrible since I could not.

And this exemplifies my view on a good portion of evangelicals as well. Some of my Catholic friends (who believe in 'good works') and are annoyed by an Evangelical tendency to post on Christian boards the initials 'osas' which apparantly means 'Once Saved Always Saved.'

To me this is a recipe for spiritual and ethical laziness. After all if I can commit the most depraved acts and turn around and just wiggle my hands together and plead for forgiveness, not from my enemy or those I have offended, but from my invisible friend, than what kind of responsibility do I actually have?

3. Some religions love to teach helplessness
It's just another way of being in control.

4. I Had A State Employee
recommend that I turn to Jeezus to help with my
unemployment problem last week. (He manages the local unemployment office).

I wanted to tell him that it was inappropriate (and unconstitutional)
to push his religion while conducting state business. Then I went into
snark mode and almost asked; "Is he hiring?". In the end I just bit my
tongue and said nothing. After all, it wouldn't be very "christian" of me
to dump on his beliefs.
