Honey the chihuahua is all dressed up for a flight bound for New York at SFO on Wednesday. Faced with an over population of chihuahuas in its shelter, San Francisco Animal Care and Control teamed up with Virgin America airlines to airlift 15 pooches to New York where demand for the breed is high.

Calif. Chihuahuas coming to NYC

Fifteen Chihuahuas are arriving in New York City from California. A glut of the tiny dogs is overloading the Golden State's animal shelters.

About 30 percent of California shelter dogs are Chihuahuas. It's believed movies like "Beverly Hills Chihuahua" have made them popular. But ASPCA Vice President Gail Buchwald said "irresponsible breeding" was the probable cause. She said the East Coast has long had a shortage of small dogs.

I am convinced Voodoo is learning to spell! He knows certain words, so I started to spell them...well, damn if he didn't start showing the same indicators had I actually said the word. So far, he has learned "out" and "bed."

8. Love ours, would get another.

We have a Chihuahua and another small dog that is a mix with some Chihuahua in her. Both are wonderful dogs.

We have a 21 year old boxer mix that keeps hanging on. We keep thinking, he doesn't have much longer, but he is still going strong and he's happy. We have no idea how long he'll last.

But when his time does come, we will probably get another dog, and I'd be happy adopting a Chihuahua.

I love Chihuahuas. Many are high-strung, nervous and jumpy, but when they get to know you they are very affectionate and lovey-dovey.
