Wow. Two different perspectives on the sinking of the Ady Gil by Japanese whalers...
Sorry if these have been posted before. This could have been much worse than it actually was. All in all, I'm wondering why the Ady Gil never made any defensive movements.

While I support the anti-whaling efforts with my heart and my wallet, I am of the opinion sometimes that Paul Watson puts his people in harm's way a little too often, and a little too dramatically.

An OT Question for really smart DU'ers: How do you embed the Youtube player in a post?

2. I think you can only embed the videos in the Political Videos Forum.

I think there is a sticky on top in that forum that explains how to do it.

4. Did it actually sink?
It's a total loss, but I hadn't heard that it actually sank.

5. Correct. I seem to have jumped the gun. From the Sea Shepherd website:
"The Ady Gil is believed to be sinking and chances of salvage are very grim."

It does not say the boat has actually sunk.

Sorry.

6. NP. It's only good for salvage, regardless.
The engines and nav equipment in that boat will be worth something.

7. That second perspective is much clearer in what happened. The whaling vessel clearly changed course
thanks for posting.

I withheld judgement on what happened when the first video was the only one available. The second video is pretty decisive.

11. I agree. And I'll add "Fuck insane egomaniac vigilantes".
Yes, a SSCS detractor who doesn't support the Japanese whalers...

...most SSCS detractors have a similar view.

Let us not mince words.

Seriously, the mod who deleted my earlier post failed to note that I specified Japanese whaling policy, not the Japanese themselves. A lotta kneejerkin' going on, but forgiven.

The real last laugh -- tons of meat rotting in warehouses because the COST of whaling is so high that the industry has to be heavily subsidized AND outrageously overpriced.

Now if there weren't vigilantes out there policing a law-free zone I imagine whaling would be a lot cheaper, so the crew has my 100% support.

I still think dumbshit critics of the anti-whaling methods who give five bucks a year to Sierra club and think they're doing something vital should probably put up more or shut up more. It's so easy to be a scorekeeper that we forget taking the ball down field requires a quarterback, not an accountant.

9. This part of your comment could not be truer...
'I am of the opinion sometimes that Paul Watson puts his people in harm's way a little too often, and a little too dramatically.' He has been very lucky that he has not already killed some of his crew. I will add that he makes the waters less safe for those of us who follow the rules.

14. that was funny
I think it was a bigger indictment of the kimono wearing sword wielding pseudo wannabe samurai whale killers though.

A bigger indictment of Japanese whaling is the loss of their domestic market's interest in whale meat. The "race card" that people play when pretending to give a damn about Watson's tactics is the stupidest thing I have heard yet. Watson's crew is anti-whaling, not anti-japanese, and I'm sure some moran here would qualify him as anti-Norwegian if Norway was whaling in the southern ocean. It's irrelevant.
