All union members, check in here.
Teacher and union member for 10 years now. Thanks to the union, I'm slightly less screwed than I might otherwise be. But this is Texas, so I don't ask for miracles. That said, I know the union's got my back.

Never forget: until FDR reversed federal policy and started protecting instead of harassing trade unions, this country was headed toward totalitarianism. Unionism reversed the trends of the early 20th Century and made this country a majority middle class nation, which is the bedrock of American prosperity and stability. They aren't perfect, but they have made a positive difference... and the decline of the middle class starting in the 1970s is connected to the decline of unions.

He worked for the City of New Haven for 10 years before being laid off along with 13 others by the mayor, who had demanded that the union stop representing the janitors or the city hall people would be axed. The union wouldn't back down and bad as it was for my husband, it would have been a crime for the most vulnerable of the city's workforce to be abandoned. Mayor DeStefano will rot in hell for that one...

I've been a member of PIPSC (Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada) for several years now, and I was in PSAC (Public Service Alliance of Canada) for a few years before that.

We do really well - our annual cost-of-living adjustments are pretty well locked in - but it would be interesting to see if those increases would be so consistent if the Institute also had to get the employer to provide employees with good health insurance.

The Laborers' International Union of North America

Like the plaque at my local says,

"Labor is prior to, and independent of, capital. Capital is only the fruit of labor, and could never have existed if labor had not first existed. Labor is the superior of capital, and deserves much the higher consideration."*

84. We need to support the grassroots unions. (NMASS)
Edited on Thu Jan-07-10 01:54 AM by carsonscorner
Workers are being exploited everyday, and no one is shedding any light on it.

For my college radio show, my correspondent, Eddie Goldman, interviewed JoAnn Lum of NMASS, The National Mobilization Agaisnt Sweat Shops. Kill two birds with one stone: support local progressive talk, and help grassroot unions.

107. Former AFSCME Steward. I agree with you -unions are not perfect, but
working conditions would not have changed since the 1930's without them. Many of the GOPers want to take conditions back to what they were then, and we must go back to a union friendly environment to defeat that intention.
