In recent months pollsters have been pointing to softening support for Democrats as a sign that the GOP may make a big comeback in the 2010 elections. But the party's historically poor financial position means it has more of an uphill battle than many political observers realize.

Having spent large amounts of cash winning the New Jersey and Virginia governor's races in 2009, the Republican National Committee ended 2009 with $8.7 million in the bank, down from $22.8 million at the start of 2009, when Michael Steele took over as party chairman. It marks the lowest amount of cash on hand going into an election year in a decade, The Hill reports.

2. Doesn't augur well for the GOP
In addition to mounting challenges for open Democratic seats, they have even more open seats of their own to defend in both the House and the Senate. Unless they can recruit a lot of self-funding candidates who are willing to spend their own money for the chance to be in the irrelevant minority where they can't set policy, the GOP is going to have a rough go of it in 2010.

5. Well, they did win in NJ and Va.
Hate to say it, but some of their money was well-spent.

6. Or maybe the big money boys see that their $ is well spent on Democrats
who are as equally ready to do their bidding as republicans but in a softer more muted manner.

8. They were idiots to fight for governorships with the state belt tightening coming.
Now they get to be associated with cruel cuts in a recession.
