Do you think Dorgan got disgusted after the drug importation back stab?
Dorgan was shocked that his attempt to pass a drug importation amendment lost. He said he thought he had the votes. Said he was promised the votes and then it went down.

I keep thinking that this put his decision in place. Why should he work so hard and then have the rug pulled out?

1. Wow - promised the votes then it went down? I'd be disgusted if I were he --
I don't blame him for leaving.

Even if this isn't the entire reason for his retirement, it's sure to have played a part in his decision.

3. He sure doesn't deserve to be treated like that -- after all he's done these many years. nt

6. He just told Ed Schultz that he's going to get it passed this next session
I wonder if he talked to the president about it this morning.

15. Yep, one is entitled to one's opinion
but not to one's own facts - Dorgan says he wants to get that bill passed this year, which is 180 degrees from being disgusted.

19. She may have posted before he said that, or before she knew. I know she thinks highly
of him, and it's a valid question. Especially if she hadn't heard his statement about getting the bill passed.

I kind of thought that would have had an effect on his decision (again, before I heard him say that about getting it passed) because really, who could blame someone for trying and trying (and trying -40 years!) and being met with resistance. I wouldn't be able to last that long, that's for sure.

The more I'm learning about him the more I'm grateful for what he's done. I'm sorry to see him go, and I hope he's really happy. AND, of course, I hope he gets that bill passed! That would be such a rewarding final accomplishment.

20. He is awesome - clean as a whistle.
I get very depressed and disappointed and disheartened when people make up stuff - we get so much BS from the right, that sometimes my brain just freezes up. Hence, I get emotional, and probably should not, when I see people on the left doing the same thing.

Judgment should be reserved until such time as facts are known.

Sometimes, it reminds me of the telephone game one learned when young - someone says something like "bird" and by the time the person at the end of ten other people gets the message, it has changed to "cat".

22. And we each hear the same thing differently, too.
I hear, for example, Tweety saying "well you're saying, you just said" and I'm thinking that's not at all what I heard! So that gets thrown into the frustration mix as well. We even interpret "facts" in our own ways.

We're a wacky species, that's for sure. :hi:

the years. The man is passionate about his causes (remember when he pleaded with the senate in 1999 to vote against deregulation of banks?) and his causes are ALWAYS for the people, particularly his rural folks. Lobbyists be damned. The drug importation issue is no exception. He fought hard (he pleaded) in committee and on the senate floor to get this into the health reform bill and I saw how painfully disappointed he was when it was rejected. You should have seen him. On that day I said to myself "He ain't takin' this lying down". I believe this defeat entered into his decision to exit. Until then however, he will fight with the passion of Ted Kennedy to get this passed and I plan to follow every step of it... and it will be the fight of his life. Then he can rest.

13. Thanks for explaining that for me
I didn't see that reply. I just wondered since it was a big disappointment and he's one of the good guys.

I always figure there's a political reason. We're wondering about our Governor Ritter's decision not to run for reelection here in Colorado. His explanation of today was a version of "I want to spend more time with my family". That's one I find hard to believe.

16. Yep. I think he was disgusted & after fighting the RW crap from the Bush administration for 8 years
he didn't care to stay and fight a Democratic president over corporate rape of the working and middle classes. And, no, I would not expect him to say that for public consumption. It is, after all, still politics.

My guess is that it went further than that- he saw that there'd be a lot more (and perhaps worse) incidents like this coming down the pipe.
