To see that when Dubya began his second year, he had over 80% approval ratings? To see that Obama's ratings are lower than Clinton's the year Republicans took back Congress? Why he's lower than Bush 41 and Carter - each of whom ended up not being reelected.
This is good news....why?
I'm not a troll, I'm just a pessimist and cynic.

5. Both Reagan and Obama had their recessions early in their first terms so a |
|
recovery could be well under way by the time they run for reelection.
Remember that the economy was actually coming out of a recession at the end of poppy Bush's term so his recession was late and he was hit with it (and seeming out of touch) right at election time. Clinton then had an economy in recovery. People aren't so pissed off when they have jobs.
Poppy and W's numbers were huge after Gulf War I and Sept 11 but those certainly didn't last. (Let's ignore 2004)
When they go through the economic stats, they frequently say "this is the worst since 1982, blah, blah" - right, that was Reagan. Reagan actually went down into the mid-30's. Obama has had a worse economy and only hit the high 40's.
Carter's economy sucked at the end - another recipe for losing reelection.
If Obama can get the economy turned around, he'll be in good shape. It is in the process of turning. The House already passed a new jobs program. The Senate will be working on it when they get back. A lot of the stimulus hasn't even hit yet.
It's OK to doubt the pessimism and cynicism too.
