01-01-2010 The Real I.D. Law
I had to renew my D/L today. I was astonished to find out that I needed my birth certificate and 2 other forms of I.D. My old license is no longer proof of identity.

I happen to be in Florida, so it was bad enough when I learned that the cost of a D/L and registration has now doubled and tripled over the last year. But when they asked me for my birth certificate... along with copies of tax receipts and/or voter registration and a copy of my utility bill, I could almost hear the voice of the Gestapo.. "your papers please".

Maybe I'm over reacting.. but it seems to me that we are no more than one underwear bomber away from a Federal Passport and regional check points.

Jan 1, 2010 Real I.D. Law Now In Effect

http://www.miamiherald.com/569/story/1395379.html

A trip to the DMV has always required a certain level of mental preparation -- the patience to endure what could be a long wait, the self-esteem to shrug off a license picture you know doesn't really look like you.

Get ready to dig through closets and filing drawers for your birth certificate or U.S. passport. Those items, along with federally-issued citizenship or naturalization documents, or consular reports of a birth overseas, are the only documents that will qualify as ``primary identification.''
___________________________________________________________________________________________________

Establishing identity: Your old driver's license will no longer be accepted as a primary proof of identity. You'll need one of the following: a government-issued birth certificate, a valid U.S. passport, federally issued citizenship or naturalization documents, or consular reports of a birth overseas.

In addition, applicants will need to bring each of the following:

Proof of Social Security number: Acceptable forms of proof include your Social Security card, W-2 form, or paycheck.

Proof of residential address: You'll need two of these. Acceptable items include monthly mortgage statements, Florida Voter Registration Cards, utility bills from the past two months, or a Florida vehicle registration or title.

1. Went through that a couple of years ago in Missouri
Had to show up with a "certified copy" of my Birth Certificate ($15.00 at the county records office) because the one photostat I had been given by my Mom (and had always worked for everything else) was no longer good enough. So in order to get my DL I took my trip to the County Records office, plunked down my $15.00, filled out the form and as proof of ID, I showed them my soon to expire DL. Wrote a LTTE to the local paper and talked with my State Rep on this exercise in circular logic and it made no sense to them either, but that changed nothing.

Sometimes it's just amazing and other times it's just...........:banghead:

3. yet another BS law that was passed in the Bush era and
remains largely unchallenged, despite the fact that it treats citizens as criminals.

9. Not a peep except from civil libertarians on repealing this piece of shit law.
The Democratic leadership moves slower than a glacier at times.

11. Go to a lawyer and challenge it then
Take it up to the Supreme Court and maybe they will find it unconstitutional.

4. No too bad here in TN. There are so many white Republicon poor people
that if they made it too hard, then most of the Republicons couldn't vote. You just needed a copy (any old copy seemed to work)of your birth certificate. They even made allowances for church and bible records of birth.

5. There is a tremendous amount
Edited on Thu Jan-07-10 06:55 AM by Libertas1776
of opposition to that whole Real id scheme and I seriously doubt it will ever become a national thing, especially considering that about 20 something states have already passed resolutions opposing the legislation and another dozen or so have legislation pending. Unfortunately, there are a handful of states that are acting a little gung ho for it, and I think Florida is one of them.

6. In Texas
A few years ago here in Texas I had to show my old drivers' license and proof of insurance.
The thing that got me was that I had to give a 'thumb print'.
I know that when I go this year there will probably be more things required and it is a bunch of BS!

7. Here in NC as well
it was passed so that the chances of an illegal immigrant getting a driver's license would be diminished, especially since all you need to fill ou an I-9 for employment are a social security card (easily forged) and a driver's license.

To me, it was not a big deal. I had to show my green card, my NY license and social security card which still says that I'm not authorized for employment without INS authorization (I haven't changed it in a while).

I didn't find the requirements to be cumbersome.

8. I had to show 6 points of ID when transfering my license
from NY to NJ.... the out of state license was only 1 of the 6 points. That entailed a battle with my parents over my birth certificate which I eventually got. I think the other ID I ended up showing was my SS card, school ID, and a utility bill to prove my address.

Beginning January 1, 2010, Florida will have new documentation requirements for residents renewing or obtaining a new driver license or identification card. For office visits, you must bring original documents that prove your identity, social security number and residential address.
