Looks like I'm going to be laid off (along with others) at my company soon. |
|
This sucks. I know I'm not alone in this, but I can still be pissed, right?

Watch them wait until the reduced COBRA benefits don't apply anymore. I think they extended the time for the layoff to take advantage of that benefit is extended by 3 months, and then you can get the reduced COBRA. It isn't like the employer will have to pay for it, they get refunds from payroll taxes.

16. Thanks, y'all. More venting below (sorry). |

The thing that really blows chunks is this is a "green energy" company, and they've managed to run it into the ground.
Not only will the big wigs keep their jobs, but the president's son works there. I'm sure he won't be let go (and he's a worthless piece of shit).
The president decided about a year ago that his daughter, who doesn't officially work there, should take over the newsletter (which I do). He said "nothing personal."
I've seen the writing on the wall for a while now. My boss gave me a head's up a few weeks ago that it would be wise to really start looking. That same day, we got an email saying they were going to stop matching our 401K.
My boss told me he's working to get the hell out of there, and when he lands, he'll call me for a job (I'm not overly optimistic, but I will hold him to that recommendation letter he promised.).
The sad part is despite the upper management fucking up, my boss has been really great (and I've had some doozies). He's been cool when I've wanted to take off, need to leave early for dr's appointments, etc. and he fought to get me a bigger raise last year than I received (management wouldn't give me as big a one as he wanted me to have). Frankly, I wasn't expecting anything in this economy.

It's scary and depressing... I hope your unemployment is briefer than it would have been a year ago, when everyone was predicting the end of the world and no improvement in sight.
I really am sorry. These are hard times we're living in.

It's pretty vicious out there right now. And despite all the PR from the WH, we don't expect it to get better.

this time i ran out of unemployment insurance two months before 62...that goodness for social security.
you may be alright..unemployment last for a year and you were laid off now so you won`t be out of work as long as others. the longer you are out of work the harder it is to get rehired.

19. I was let go from a job (given no notice anything was wrong; told |
|
at the time "just not a good fit.") in Jan. 2007 (what is it about January?), and it took me six months to get this job. I'm concerned about how long it will take to get back on my feet. Fortunately, hubby has a job and I'm on his insurance (before, he was on mine, so we had Cobra to pay..that sucked!); plus, I just paid my car off in October. Still, it's so scary!

 I was let go at the end of last July. You have every right to be pissed, so don't hold back. I also wish I could tell you that it's not so bad and that things will get better soon, but where I am - there is nothing out there. Not even part time work.
So all I can do is agree with you: This sucks. Bigtime.

24. "I'm going to be laid off (along with others) at my company soon." Your company? |
|
Edited on Thu Jan-07-10 11:41 PM by Better Believe It
If it was your company you would not be laid off. I bet the owner(s) of the company won't be fired and will still be collecting a paycheck if not more, unless it's a small time business.
I wish you well and success in finding a good job with a living wage and decent benefits.
However, why do so many people getting screwed over by big companies constantly talk about "my" company?
They don't own it, they don't control it and they don't make any corporate decisions.
Just some effective brainwashing by corporate America and the media I guess.

25. If you receive a lump sum severence package, you should still go file for UEC 2-weeks after layoff. |
|
The HR reps will have you sign a separation agreement saying, among other things, you can't file for UEC right away. They'll tell you that if you get a lump sum of 12-weeks of severence pay, you can't file for UEC for 12-weeks...this is BS.
If you read the sep. agreement, you'll find a severability clause stating that if any part of the agreemnent is legally unenforcable, the remainder of the agreement shall stand. Their hope is that the those being laid-off won't question the "you can't file for xx-weeks" story.
State laws may vary, consult your UEC office or a trusted advocate.
