George Stephanopoulos Takes Responsibility
Fine. Now he needs to do it on the air, where everyone who heard ghouliani can hear how George just let it happen without challenging him, re: truth.

George Stephanopoulos Takes Responsibility

By Spencer Ackerman 1/8/10 3:24 PM

I chided the ABC newsman for barely correcting Rudy Giuliani’s incorrect assertion that there were no terrorist attacks under George W. Bush’s presidency. Stephanopoulos comes back with this classy update:

Through his spokesman, Rudy Giuliani has clarified the remarks he made this morning on GMA regarding terrorist attacks on the United States under Presidents Bush and Obama.

The Mayor’s spokesman says that the remark “didn’t come across as it was intended” and that Giuliani was “clearly talking post-9/11 with regards to Islamic terrorist attacks on our soil.”

Whatever the Mayor meant, it’s not what he said. All of you who have pointed out that I should have pressed him on that misstatement in the moment are right. My mistake, my responsibility.

Giuliani is still forgetting about the post-9/11 anthrax attacks, but whatever, he’s a hopeless case. Stephanopoulos deserves credit and praise for this update.

1. I so want him off GMA.
At this point I don't care what he says. Robin Roberts deserves a better cohost.

2. What does "take responsibility" mean? Is it just something you say and that's that?
Sure seems that way.

4. he needs to also mention that it's a pattern
Mary Matalin, Dana Perino, and Rudy again the other day have all been revising history on TV.

Calling them out is the bare minimum. Ideally they would announce that Giuliani will no longer appear on ABC because ABC doesn't want guests who blatantly lie to their audiences.

7. I don't watch GMA anymore.
Mainly because of the Adam Lambert situation, which, I believe, was a network thing and not a GMA thing, but still. I have since been watching CBS in the morning and I like it.

8. He deserves neither credit nor praise
He apologized for not doing his job. How is that worth of praise?
