Update: As I suspected, I got laid off today (along with five others).
They told my good friend, the office manager (who just got back from medical leave and whose mother passed away on Christmas), that they were going to cut her hours from 40 to 30 "or she could quit."

They laid off three guys who work in the shop (welders/mechanics) of my now-former company, and the CAD Designer. They also laid off the admin. assistant in one of the departments who said, "I do a good job; my guys will look out for me." OK, no one is looking out for you. I did a good job. It's about the money (of course, the fat cats kept their cushy jobs).

The construction coordinator was told to do her job plus the admin's job "or quit."

One of my friends who doesn't work there thinks I got the better deal (severance plus they paid my vacation and sick leave).

Yikes!

3. Sorry about that.
Get your unemployment compensation started, rest and relax a while, then get out there and start looking again; I'm sure you'll find something good. :)

9. It's not you.....
You are not at fault. Remember that. Internalize it. It is NOT you. It's the fucking times.

I tell my son the same thing.

It is NOT you.

13. Thank you, Bigmack. True. My boss said he's trying to get out of
there; he said it may be a few months (he has a contract w/ them), but once he's out and landed somewhere, he says he's going to call me. I'm not waiting by the phone, but I totally appreciated that. We're supposed to get together for lunch in a couple of weeks. He's supposed to write me a letter of recommendation. The sad part is the place was fucked up, but my boss was great. It is definitely the economy (that's what they told me, too.).

16. Bites the big one.
Yeah, my boss felt super bad; the upper management..not so much. The treasurer was a total dickweed. I told him, "I enjoyed working with you," and he made some weird ass comment. Whatever, douchebag. LOL!

21. That's really unfortunate. Good Luck rebounding.
It's hard to get the axe like that. I hope you'll try to get a plan that gives you some options, but I know how hard these times are for finding new positions.

Please try to stay positive. Confidence and optimism sell, even when it is hard to muster them.

22. Sorry to hear you've joined the ranks...
just remember that you are not your job. My husband is still doing just contract work w/no bennies after being laid off almost exactly a year ago, with no prospects in sight (he'd been there 9 years). Best of luck to you and hang in there!

24. Please remember that it is not you...
...as others have said.

I used to work for a high-tech company that went kablooey during the dotcom bust. There were so many talented
people at this company and they all went on to do amazing things. Many started their own companies. Others
went to big cities and were vice presidents and project managers at Disney, Dreamworks, GE, Microsoft, etc.

So many of these talented people were laid off. You can be a fabulous worker and a very talented, wonderful person--and
still get laid off. So many have. You are not alone...just remember that!
